Most of these retro style radios look 1980s and earlier design to me, hard to find something that screams "90s".
I get the appeal of an old school unit with all physical buttons but I think a clean modern HU doesn't look too far out of place in an 80 series plus you get all the latest features. After all whats the point in having a retro style radio and then clutter up the dash with tablets and phones for navigation and whatnot... unless you don't need that. Probably my favorite modern design was the Sony AX1000 series, timless imo

That is that route I was gonna go with, but with how low the head unit sits it makes it not practical (to me at least) to use it for navigation, so Id still ended up with a phone mounted up higher (like I have now).
That is why I decided to go with the retro look.

Understandable. The layout is less than ideal to operate a touchscreen while driving and quite distracting. Fortunately Maps has really good voice input for navigation but I always forget this exists while fiddling with the screen getting ready to pull over 🤣 Whatsapp in Carplay/Android auto also reads and records messages without having to touch the screen which is pretty neat, used that feature a lot.
