Pioneer just posted this guide on their website:

Sounds like video-related features are lost, firmware updates on the way to restore some bluetooth functionality.

Well according the AVIC forums (yes, there are forums for a single model series of head units apparently), the apple lightning adapter will for the most part restore all previous iphone functionality to the head unit as far as ipod control and app functionality like pandora. I do believe, as previously stated though, that video functionality may be lost and I don't quite see how a firmware update could resolve this as it seems to be a hardware issue. There is a cable version of the adapter that is slightly more expensive, but it will probably look and fit a lot prettier than a brick-like adapter.

Personally, I've never played a video on my head unit from my iphone in the first place and I can't quite fathom the point since the screen isn't all that much bigger, but I can understand how this may upset some. I don't see this as stopping me from upgrading to the 5 though.

On point: the video will not output to the Pioneer. That effects not just playing Netflix and youtube but effects app mode. If you're not familiar with app mode it enables an iOS app to have a video out for second screen use - Motion X GPS drive for example allows the moving map on the pioneer while the app controls are on the phone. Advanced App mode even allows control of the phone or running app from the screen of the head unit. Both of those functions will not work at this point and will require hardware changes on the pioneer. AVIC 150 anyone?

I don't think my btx920 had such a feature but that would definitely be a big one to lose. I wonder if pioneer might be able to produce some sort of in-line digital to analog converter. I'm sure if they really put their minds to it, they could do it but my experience with pioneer is that they generally release a product and forget about it.

It'll be a new head unit.

This is a pain in the ass but in the future the lightning connectors far more capable than the 30 pin could ever be.

Well, bit the bullet and got an iPhone 5 on order. Guess I will be switching out my trusty VAIS box w/ dock connector for a bluetooth box so to avoid any connector issues. I will update here once I get it all figured out. I might also pickup a 30-pin adapter for the 5 and try it with Vais just to let others know for reference.

The 30 pin to Lighting works on my adapter. It's a true POS but works. I would bet the Vais works with the adapter.

Can you elaborate on why the lightening adapter is a POS? I mean it's an cable, pretty simple piece of hardware.

I picked mine up from the Apple Store yesterday. Which by the way for others looking, Apple's online store says backordered. However my local Apple store had plenty of each style adapter in stock. Yes, they are not cheap. I'm still skeptical about the chinese knockoffs, but sure they will be working and out soon. I do desire a black lightening cable and adapter.

Phones doesn't arrive until mid Nov.
