Head problems with '97 3.4L

Friend just picked up a nice '97 4skinner for $1000, catch is there is a problem with either the head or headgasket (just what he has been told-just picked it up last weekend).

I have been around a few of these engines, but not many, are there any known headgasket/head problems? Anything in particular that may help us figure out the problem?

I almost bought a friend of mine's 96 4Runner, he told me the head gasket had been recalled.

I had a 97 and 00 after that, no problems but both were very low-mileage.

The head gasket on my 96 was one of the recalled ones. No problem since they fixed it. (No problem before, either!)

Check the vehicle with Toyota to see if it has been replaced.

Thanks for the tips, called up the friend and told him he should run the vin with Toyota to get the scoop.
