Does anybody local have the head gasket DVD I could borrow?
I'm pushing 180k and I feel I'm on borrowed time. Gotta get it DONE!

I think I have one. I'll check when I get home.

BTW, how have you been?

Hey there Eric!
Things have been really rough for me the last few years. More recently, fighting cancer...

If you have one, that would be fantastic! Please let me know!

Sorry to hear that Reid! Wish you the best in your fight!

I may have a blown HG. Last few day trips have had 35° swings in temp while climbing the grades on the I8 to and from the desert. I am mysteriously losing coolant, my oil level keeps diving on me and have had my oil light come on while on my way home from the last two trips. And finally I have a white film on the underside of my oil cap. I hardly drive the truck at all anymore so it's tough to tell for sure. Think it's time to get it over to john and do a pressure test on the cooling system and a compression test or something for the head?.

With a '97 Reid? I don't know that I'd jump into doing the HG as preventative maintenance unless you really want to. Isn't the '97 AFTER the HG redesign? It's the '94's that have been notoriously bad about blown HG's.

Thanks Mark. I'm putting up good fight!
Oh man, it sounds like you've got a bad HG!

Thanks Brent,
I've heard others say the same thing. Not sure about the redesigned HG..... I don't really want too do it, however, I drive to Texas and back occasionally, and I'd hate to have it pop during a trip. That's really my biggest concern.

Well, My original HG blew at 205,000. Old design. New design in now and I've driven over 2000 miles on twor or three trips over to Moab, UT and back from SoCal, towing a trailer. No issues. All the best with whatever you end up doing to make you comfortable!

FYI! Just got off the phone with John of SD Trux and he recommends getting the Head tested because many times a truck will come back a year later after a HG with the same systems and it's because the head is cracked now. So you are doing the job a second time. Now it's a tough decision to replace the head since it is a $1,500 ticket item after being machined on top of the typical HG job. So if you are looking to keep your rig long term you should consider replacing the head when you do the HG job.

I'll second Bluetribal's advice!!! If I'm to have believed the shop that did my HG the first time, the head, when sent out for machining, was tested per my request and was fine. When I continued to have issues, including a semi-related misfire (not to HG itself - crappy job by first shop), I took it to John and he found a huge crack visible to the eye at my #5 cylinder head bolt. There's no way even an incompetent shop would have missed it.

Bite the bullet and replace the head, nipples and assorted other parts the first time and have John do it right! My truck came back running as good as the day I bought it and drove it off the lot in 1994. Unfortunately for me, it was the 2nd time in less than a year I paid for a HG job!
