Not gonna lie...I'm a little nervous and a little excited.

I did the valve cover gasket and egr last summer so I know I can do it.

When I did it, I was also swapping the radiator so I had everything out. The fsm doesn't say to remove it. Do most people leave the fan/shroud/radiator in if they are not being replaced?

Another, probably stupid question, is there is nothing about draining the oil, just the coolant. I changed the oil last week. Do I need to also drain the oil? I did last time, but just because I was also changing the oil.

Wish me luck, and if you like free beer and pizza...feel free to come over and have some. Don't wear nice clothes.

It's not too bad really. I started by removing the exhaust side stuff then moved over to the Intake. I left the radiator and fan shroud on during the whole process. If you're doing the work because oil mixed with the coolant, then yeah change the oil. I'd probably do it anyways, but it may be unnecessary if you're just doing it for PM.

And where is this free pizza and beer party located? :)

Thanks...Fresno, California!

The hg is definitely bad. Starts to get hot as soon as I turn the air on. Used bars leak, professional grade with carbon fiber which worked until I put a for sale sign on it.

I see bubbles in the overflow also, which from what I've read is a sure sign.

I don't see any signs of mixing so...oil is a maybe.

Ah, a little too south for me to join the party.

I would definitely change the oil before firing it back up. While the head is at the shop, it would be a good time to address the fan clutch if you haven't already been too.

Best of luck!

I pulled my rad as I initially just didn't want to break the overflow nipple off when absentminded laying a support hand - ended up swapping to a brass 3 row anyhow, but still, just didn't want to kill the fragile little thing.

My way = rarely the normal way, so take as you like.

I removed the shroud and fan but not radiator. Make sure to secure the timing gear to the chain and highlight match marks.

Good luck

Not having the head machined unless it is out of spec. The fsm shows specs for warpage

I used a large sharpening stone to hone the block after I cleaned all the gasket material off. One large enough to span the width and about 2" wide.

I would also recommend replacing the water bypass lines, fuel filter, and PHH while you have the throttle body and intake off.

Progress first day...had a party in the middle of the day but so far...pretty easy.

Does anyone have a trick for the bottom union bolt for the fuel inlet?

Had to laugh, your brown / tan swirls rug is same Wally rug from 5-7 yrs ago adorning my dog territory - your 80 & my dog have similar tastes. :p

I'm not really into gasket, but I like head & free beer.

Disconnect the banjo Union bolt from the fuel rail, then with long extension I disconnect the front banjo bolt from the front of the fuel filter leave back one on till u pull the intake, or put a wrench on it

The lack of open beer in the engine bay or on the work table is disturbing.

I have a stuck bolt ( starting to strip) on the underside of the intake manifold.

Can I leave it attached and pull ot out with the head?

Are you using 6 point sockets? You can but you need to fish the wiring harness thru, I don't do them the way fsm says, I disconnect from the inside computers inside glove box unhook from wall and all sensors that need be then fish thru intake gap

Which bolt is stripping?

Drain oil and get that filter out of your way also

Helps to pull the studs also on manifold so you can pull straight up instead of out and up do them last if you get your bad bolt use torq bit socket
