Well bad news. Everything was working great with new tranny and t-case until after driving around for a few days, my sm420, which was supposed to be in great shape, decided to not want to change gears anymore. I am able to get 1st, but any other gear binds and kills the engine. No neutral, no nothing. Gear shift wiggles around like it is in neutral but won't change gears. So, looks like the gears need to be adjusted. After sitting for 7 years, even with new oil and seals, something came loose after running it. I don’t break it down, but I did open it up and everything looked clean and moved freely. Must have just been due to sitting for so long.
I am out of luck. Have to pull the whole damn thing (again 3rd time) and rebuild it with the original owner who has rebuilt sm420's before (he has a beautiful 66 fj40 that he bought off the show room floor and who happened to sell the tranny to me).
He is a great older retired navy guy and drove out to the boon docks while I was stuck with my son at the river to tow me home. Luckily he knew where we were because we takes our dogs out there to train them. No way a tow truck would have found us, let alone made it out there. I had my son with me and it got dark and no where in the valley is totally safe to be alone at night unless armed, which I wasn't at the time so it was a bit stressful. He felt so bad that the tranny he sold me had problems that he was actually in tears so I can't blame him for it. He felt so bad he wanted to give my money back. But, its what happens sometimes when we buy old parts. He can pay me back by helping me rebuild it. Too bad he's too old to crawl under the damn thing and help me pull it.
No Calico for me this year. No way I can pull it, rebuild it, and get it back in. Just don't have the time.
