Hi all, as you are probably aware there was an alternator upgrade available to the guys next door with gasoline 80's using the Sequoia (is that spelt right) 130/150amp alternator?

I was advised that as the blocks for the gasoline and diesels are different so the mod may not work, any known worthwhile upgrades out there?

I have seen the 'Green machine' and other adverts ect but I like to do the research and wander around the breakers yard to see if I can find what I am looking for and save a few quid.

Any ideas?

I don't have the awnser but would like to do the same. I just can't believe Toyota put a 65amp alt in a truck with all the power options my VX limited has.... I mean it even came with a winch from the factory.

Same here.. I think the OEM alternator is seriously under-powered and a modern high-efficiency unit is probably in order.
I heard from some folks that a certain model Tercel or something has an alternator unit that fits, not sure if it is an upgrade or just a similar unit to what's on the HDJ now...

tercel alternator is 60 amp.
I don't know the upgrade number for the tundra alternator.
Why do you need a larger alternator. Are you running that much juice?

Mine is OEM 80 amp, no winch but does have heaters in the seats ect, I know it is only 15 amps more but it does show there are some weird offerings/combinations around. The plug on this model is 'oval' and the 65 amp IIRC (please check) is round, so whatver you go for cut the plug and some loom off the donor vehicle.

Little pic of the tag in case anyone is interested?

I intend to change the 24v starter to a 12v one but want to be sure that I can start it if it is very cold. So I will parallel my new OEM batteries which will give me around 1200 amps @ 12v and then I will be fitting an aux battery on the other side to power my engel and other camping stuff, so I want plenty of juice available if needed. I will also be fitting other power dependednt mods for cold weather operation just in case.

I did upgrade my Discovery from the 65 amp to 100 amps and that small amount of 25 amp was enough to keep everything OK but the 4.2 6 is a big ol lump to spin on a cold morning.

I had a quick look at the EPC and it shows the HZJ7#, HDJ80 and HZJ80 were available with a 100A 12V alternator (aussie market so i doubt you will trip over one at a wrecking yard in Spain?).

The aussies also got a 120A 12v version in their HDJ100 and HZJ105's.

Part numbers -

27060-17181 100A 12V
27060-17230 120A 12V

I hear what your saying, and being in a relatively warm climate there are not many vehicles here set up for starting in cold weather and they rarely have all the toys that would warrant a high amp alternator. I was hoping someone had come up with a swap to suit our cars, never mind I will keep on looking and it is early days yet and the thread is still young so you never know.

Are you blokes talking 24 or 12 volt? If I remember correctly this alternator thread for the 80 series was done in the last 6 months.
The aftermarket alternators here are usually 120 or 130 amp. I think Rosco posted up something about what he did. I think there was a USA
link that was about 150 amps or so but that may have been for the gas V8.

Cool, Ok it is 12 volt starting here.
I am sure Rosco said his aftermarket alternator was rated at 130 amps at 1,800 or 2,000 Rpm. I think one of the Lexus alternators is 150 amps. It would pay to ask the measurements of the bracket, bracket end to centre line of pully and see how they compare. I fitted a 85 amp Falcon alternator to my 80 series 3F [40 amp]. I had to grind 6mm off the back of the section that fits in the clamping bracket and make a new adjusting bracket. The V belt pully did not need changing. Also need to check the clocking of the bracket locations. So maybe check on the Lexus alternator.

Well bigbrowndog thanks for the links, I have emailed 'eagle' as they may have what I want, the other unit on ebay is too pricey for me and I have seen those units before, they have to be fixed and the adjuster is elsewhere on the engine. I do not want to fabricate to much and want to be able to refit my presently working perfect 80 amp.

I will let you know how I get on,

Thanks.. Do you know what year Tundra will fit??

I will post pics .. I got the part # from the 80 section to locate the 150tundra alt .. which it's bigger and usea bigger pulley shaft too .. you need to machine your 80 alt pulley to fit the tundra alt ..

I also got the connector that fit the tundra alt and put in the 80 wires ..

I pay 55 for one and 65 for the other one ( actually still rolling around my 80 cargo area .. :) )

Well if you can stop them rolling around in the boot long enough to post up a couple of snaps I would be very grateful, as I said to you in my earlier post I am waiting to send the money to the USA for my alternator because we have no Tundra/sequoia here/there.
