Have The Thermostats Recently Been Redesigned?

Hi all, while replacing my thermostat I saw a small change between the one that was in my rig and the replacement one. The replacement one has a small rubber cap that covers the cone shaped part of the thermostat's plunger, the old thermostat did not. Just wanted to know if there was a minor redesign and if so what the reason was. Thanks.

Okay, is someone waiting to say something like, "Hey dumbass, that rubber tip comes off prior to install!!!" ??? :o I'd like to make sure that this thing is in fact a redesign and not me forgetting to do something prior to install. What it looks like to me is a damper for that plunger when it is pushed all the way open? On another question, while searching I saw an old post from DAN about the range of the thermostat ... 180 degrees slightly open, and fully open at another temp (194?). Is that the same with all 80 series stats??? Thanks folks.

Dunno about a little rubber cap, but many t-stats have been redesigned to be fail safe open.

Cool, thanks Gumby. I would love it if it were a open fail safe thermostat - much more peace of mind. I really do not think that this tiny rubber cap contraption is supposed to remove; it has the stem at the end of that conical plunger ( I need to look up thermostat lingo ) going through it if i remember right and there were no instructions on either the thermostat or the FSM for removing it - it was just the only difference between the old one and the new one that I saw - well, I take that back, the new one had the cool TEQ logo stamped on it - both thermostats were OEM but slightly different. Anyone have a t-stat in a box somewhere you can look at for me? Thanks again G, mucho appreciado!

There has been a number change for 1FZ thermostats. The old number was 90916-03094 and has been replaced by 90916-03117. The 90916-03117 has a little rubber cone-thingy just below the "dome" and the Dome has green paint on it. If you have a 90916-03117 put it in and enjoy it. Be sure the jiggle pin is at or near 12 o'clock when you install the 'stat.
