Has anyone replaced just the headlight lenses?

Our 2011 headlights lenses have seen better days. I’d thought about just buying new housings (I did that on my 200 and it made it look 1,000x better), but then saw these. Anyone used them at all?

I might try to sand/buff with a kit first, but this popped up in my search for replacement headlight housings.

Takes time to sand but it works.

Kit: Sylvania

I have HID lamps and would worry about not getting a good seal with replacement lenses.

That is my concern as well. The kit comes with adhesive and I could always layer it with clear around the outside…but not sure of the lens quality.

I’d be happy with the results you got! Did you spray it with any clear afterwards?

Just the clear that came with the Sylvania kit.

I'll say this...the more effort and care you put in...the more you get out of the product.

Re-sealing the lenses is not hard. You'll need a heat gun to soften the butyl rubber that seals the lenses to the housings, and some more butyl rubber to replace any thin spots. I used a roll of Morimoto butyl from Amazon when I pulled of my lenses (on a 470, and so I could black out the chrome on the inside of the lenses - which you could also do for your 460 when you have the lenses off).

I tried a sanding/coating kit on our old Outback. It looked OK for about 2 years, after which the lenses became cloudy again. Honestly, it's less work (IMO) to just replace the lenses as it's a simpler operation than spending a couple of hours sanding and re-coating the OEM lenses. The only thing I cannot comment on is the longevity of those eBay lenses....if they aren't high-quality, coated plastic, they'll look bad in a few years too.

I agree that resealing can be simple (messy too but I don't mind that).

HID directional lamps (D4S) can be more sensitive to moisture than standard bulbs, not to mention the 25 zillion volt ballast that powers them. So though I have changed lenses on other vehicles in the past (latest was a 2002 WRX which was an entire JDM relamp), doing a wet sand/polish on a 15 year old headlamp lens every 3-5 years isn't too bad a time for me.

Time vs. money vs. more of both if something leaks.

Price isn't too bad, but I think I'd try the toothpaste method first.
