DA@#$%N.!!!!!!!!..........I would give anything to have something like that! If you build one, you have got post the build!!!!!!!

You might want to nose around on www.expeditionportal.com just for fun.

I'm the nosy Rover guy over here :) and I know there are a number of German companies that make similar mods to the Rovers, but haven't really paid attention to the Toyota applications.

Best,

Yep, ditto brtklr. I have been (not very actively) looking around for exactly that as a solution to the headroom sleeping in the truck/ cargo area drawer dilemma and the rust that is percolating in my roof. Maybe I have to make my own fiberglass molds and start selling these? My 60 series needs one though.....

The fisheye lens makes it look roomy. I would do a mock up with cardboard boxes 1st.

IMO trying to cook meals and wash dishes inside a landcruiser is both a fire risk and a pita

I've been dong SOME research, gathering pics etc. I steel need some close up shots of the interior without a headliner. I'll be picking up steel this week, as well as a plasma cutter.

Here are some pics of what I will be attempting to do.

I also picked up some westy interior. I had planned to build cabinets etc, but I came across these on Craigslist.org. They appear to fit well. I will need to make a few mods to clean it up.

why bother with the double raising roof? You could just make it go straight up square. My dad's got an old GMC van with a pop top that raises flat, and I always wondered why almost every pop top you see goes up at an angle. Raising flat really made it like a little house.

My original idea was to go straight up. I didn't have a close up pic of what the linkage should look like. but I do have a bunch of pics that show they crissXcross. If i were to cross them on the inside it would take up space from the interior. For me, trying to fab something like that might take more time. However, if you have any ideas, I'm welcome to suggestions. Better yet, would it be possible to get some pics of your dads GM?

So the tilt style, seemed easier to build. May hold up better in the wind

I'll ask him to take a picture! I wanted one anyway because I'm thinking of using a similar raising/lowering mechanism for my interior shelf/strongbox.

This is the LC78 camper we rented while in Oz. As you can see, there were three sets of supports. Each support had two fixed pivots while the other two ends slid along tracks. Notice how the front support is offset when the top is raised? Within the track were springs that would support the fiberglass top when raised. There was a handle on the inside roof. With about 30 lbs of downward force, the top would pop down into place. The locks were on the outside.

Also, look into the Maggiolina Airland tent. It has a similar mechanism but I think uses a screw type jack to raise and lower the top.

nice diagrams. I think mine had a cog mechanism but no springs... I'll have to look when I see a picture though. I want that truck.

Yes, except the spring mechanism was somehow counterbalanced. So the top would either spring open or closed and nothing in between. No actually locking mechanism to keep it open. It just held open. I wish I had taken a closer look. Try asking Ken Hanna. He recently rented a camper like it in this thread.

I would really like to see how you pull this off. I love the idea, but it seems extremely difficult.

I'll be watching, in hand.
