I'm looking for advice on doing a PINS run in the next few months, if I can get the rig up to par. I've never been, and since the in laws live in the valley I figured I can try to kill two stones with one bird over the holidays. What's there to do, what to look for and what to take?

I'm also planning a trip to big bend around the spring time. I've never been, post up if you've been there with suggestions on what to take and what to look for.

I know it's a ways off, but I need some time to save up some cash.

Go before it heats up too much. My first trip out there was Memorial Day weekend a couple of years back, and triple digits were the norm. My last trip was between Christmas and New Years last year, and day time temps were in the high 40s, so that was a bit cold. Kind of a Three Bears situation, I'm hoping for just right next time. Of course, I was on my scoot; in a cage, that would be different.

Hit RR170 out of Terlingua, and head north. It skirts the border, and is a pretty cool road.

Im heading to PINS nov 8-10.

Awesome place for surf fishing or kayaking out through the surf in solitude. Hoping for calm seas and pompano, might be a little early.

Here's a pic of my 40 around mile 30 last December, and my dodge in July (the crew wanted AC!) all the way at the land cut.

I will definitely be taking the kayak down there if I go. Maybe we should try a club run down there. It would suck for one vehicle to go and get stuck.

Its possible to get stuck if you're goofing around in loose powder in 2wd. But pretty unlikely if you're sticking to the trail. My main concern is a random mechanical problem and needing a strap for 3 hours/60 miles back to park entrance at high tide over uneven sand. and funny, I was more concerned in the dodge than the 40-----I know I can fix the 40.

Pm if our weekend is good for you. I can keep you posted on our schedule and what vehicles to look for. Ive got your back!

Tim

Thanks Tim. I'm more worried about mechanical failure than spinning in the sand. I have a few leaks here and there that need to be addressed before I can make that trip. Will definitely PM you if I make it down there that weekend.

My boys and I were just talking about this run last nigth. If you all do a club run & depending on when you all go, we may tag along. I finally started my 60 back up today but it still has some issues.

Hopefully having running good in the next month or so...

Tow rope, air comp., and genny for glamping :steer:

One/Two good spares for big bend; apparently the back roads have some sharp ones :wrench:

Nice Casita! How did it do towing on the sand? How far down PINS did you go?

Thx M8, I have since upgraded.

I was too chicken to go too far!

I came up on two sedans bogged; quickly hit the 4wd button and gunned it 'round them. :steer:

I knocked the showers p-trap loose in the deep stuff, but it was an excuse to upgrade to a HepVo valve. :p

I drove one just like that in the green zone, same color and all except it was left hand drive. That's what convinced me I needed a diesel in mine.

I'm going to try to make this trip this year, it's all contingent on how must extra cash I'll have after making some minor repairs.
