My car is probably similar - 99 - no rust - paint mostly good but clear coat gone in places - keen to address it. I am assuming that clear coat can be repaired without repainting. If so what is typical cost of fixing the clear coat ?

Thx

Every painter I went to said that the peeling clearcoat area needed to be sanded down as you can feel the bump from good paint to the peeling area. This is where the added cost was in the labor to sand these areas. I'm not sure about how limited clear coat can be repaired. Mdej3 has been helpful here.

This is all about details.

How much trim are you going to remove?
Single stage or base and clear?
How many trim pieces are going to be slightly damaged during removal and is that going to bother you?
Do you care if the new clear starts to fade or yellow after 5-10 years?

A "full paint job" can cost under $500 or be as much as $10k. If you want something that competes with OEM finishes, you're closer to 10k. Most people probably spend between $2k and 5k for a job that isn't obviously flawed, but you could get lucky below that.

THIS ⬆

I removed the roof rack and some trim areas. I went with a single-stage with urethane. Not a show truck.

Does it have to be an LX470? I painted my LC100 last year, full repaint in a different color. Ran about $6K but had to drive four states to get it done there, the cheapest I found in TX was $10K which was BS for a hunting rig, "this ain't no show truck"! :)

Paint + clear, side trim deleted (and holes welded up), rear hatch hardware deleted at the same time. Very minor body work, had 20 years of dings, dents and scrapes and a couple of bigger booboos.

That looks really slick. Good call on the paint scheme and trim delete. Leaving the crease in the body still gives you the intended "lines", but much cleaner.

Just got my 99 back from Maaco and the paint job turned out great but the original imperial jade metallic is super metallic didn’t realize how much overall the paint had faded including the clearcoat. In The shadows the paint almost looks black but in the sun it looks like a disco ball.

bummer is I approved painting the bumpers and they went with glossy which is standard for them and it looks super cheap and shiny so I’ll either have to go back and pay to have them re-paint or do it myself which I think I’m leaning towards. I think i’ll do the rust oleum bumper trim paint. lots of good threads on painting bumpers and side molding.

I throw a pic in here but it’s already too dark.

Pic? Holding up ok? Thanks!

Wow, nice job... looks very solid.

We're pretty close to each other. I'm just west of Round Rock. Where did you end up going for the paint job? Who in Austin were you considering go to otherwise?

You folks considering a hunting rig color should consider camo. My friend at Red Leg Camo has plenty of stencils in many different patterns to get you goin in the right direction. Application is easy.

If your on a budget, raptorliner is easy. Can do the whole truck for >500 and it turns out good. Higher PSI for a smooth finish seems to look similar to paint, and it's also super durable

What color is that?

Are you set on getting it painted? Between $6-800 will get you enough high-quality vinyl wrap to cover your truck if you're down to DIY. Planning on doing this down the line with the help of a friend that used to wrap sports cars as a side gig. Said an LC would be pretty simple, just gotta prep it properly.

I'm thrilled with the results, and love the color, which is "Gator Green" (looks brownish/khaki/greenish depending on the light). I had talked to a couple of restorations shops in Central Texas, nobody seemed thrilled to work on the truck and especially on the color change, so the price of the quotes may have reflected lack of enthusiasm. A great friend who lives in Idaho offered to help, having a shop local to him that had painted multiple Land Cruisers and was willing to take on the project. Drove it up to SLC to meet him and he trailered it back to Idaho (with a cool visit to the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum). A few months later I flew up to Boise and picked it up, hitting Moab, Colorado, New Mexico and west Texas trails on the way back! :)

Offer is open, anyone in this area -or rolling through Austin area- that wants to stop and check it out or shoot the Cruiser sh*t, c'mon down! :)

Separate question, but somewhat related.. What color are those wheels? They don't seem like a plain "silver". We're they powder coated?
