Several months ago I posted about shift point adjustments. I adjusted the cable so that the shift points are more favorable, but it seems to shift too harshly at times. Fine under normal acceleration, but if you let off the throttle before a shift, it bangs pretty good.

Really hits in low range. Almost feels like someone bumps you in the rear
.\

Is there a way to maintain the shift points and soften the shift?

U-joints/tranny mount?

Could be. Will have it up in the air and plan to check the runout of the shaft and have a look at the mounts
Are you losing transmission fluid into the transfer?

This cruiser clunk is or can be dam hard to pin down sometimes. It was a combination of things that helped my clunk. U-joints, motor mount, fluid, un- balanced drive shaft. Things of that nature.

Try backing off the tightness of the throttle valve cable by a half turn. If it still shifts hard, back off another half turn of the adjusting screw. If you get lucky, you just might find a happy medium of shift points you like and less shifting harshness. Sometimes, a 1/4 turn can be the difference.

I have seen this twice in FJ62s. It seems, at least in the Cruisers I drove, that the torque converter was not functioning properly. It would not release and it was never in any mode other than locked which made for horrible driveability, bad acceleration, HARSH shifting and eventually a transmission failure as the clutches got fried due to the fact that they were forced to slip when the vehicle was stopped when the torque converter should have released pressure on them. Operating the rig in low range was impossible, the brakes couldn't stop the rig at all.

Steve, where is that transmission supplemental manual? Did Ken F. have that? I have a paper copy but not the digital.

Does it shift hard in all gears or just from 2nd to 3rd?

Also, how old is that shifting cable? i found that no matter how i adjusted the cable nothing worked and so i replaced it and it turned out that the cable was all rusted inside and that is what was causeing the harsh shifting. You would be suprised on what a new cable will do to these rigs.
