Any suggestions on a date for a Harlan Run???? What happened to the "April Fools Toyota Crawl" that was put on every year?

2012 April Fools Day Harlan, KY - Pirate4x4.Com

I'm taking my family and we are camping for the weekend.

Thanks Profro!! We went in 08 and had a really good time BUT we had a guy with us that thought it would be a good idea and drink beer all day and try to wheel his 4runner. It turned out to be more of a recovery mission to get his truck out after he rolled it a couple times. We tried to tell him but some people are just IDIOTS. After that trip we didn't call him to go anymore. Hope to see you there. Maybe we can convoy up there.I know my wife's school is on spring break (CLINTON ELEMENTARY) that's in your neck of the woods. I'll talk with her and get back with you .

I would love to but it looks like I'm gonna have to miss this one . If anything changes I'll definitely let you know.

So PROFRO how did it go?? Hate I missed it!

It was really great. I hate to admit it but I think I like the park better than Coal Creek. The tails are very well marked, the bigger obstacles have great access for watching, and the trails were just more fun. Furthermore the classification of trails was phenomenal. When we started a truck class 3 I knew we would not end up in over our heads. Since I had the whole family (9 mo included) we stuck to trails that didn't require lockers, mostly truck class 2 and 3. While we did do some truck class 4s the conditions and the 80 didn't require being locked.

However the best part was that 2 days of wheeling and camping for 4 people cost a whopping $45. At Coal Creek it would have cost Over $150. Ridiculous.

The event didn't have group led rides, so it was hard to find a group that was doing what we wanted to do. most groups were wanting to do the harder stuff and while I and the 80 wanted to as well. It was better for us to stick to the moderately hard stuff and just explore.

But we had a great time and I can't wait to go back.

Damn Doug I didn't know you were a family guy! With all the mountain biking, motocross, wheelin, etc I figured you as a single guy, lol. We should get the families together for the next trip.

Harlan is a good place to go ride...I've been there two or three times.

I have yet to go there but I grew up on the VA side of the mountain. Its so cheap cause not many locals will pay to wheel. I never paid to wheel until I went to a cruiser event. There are soo many mining, gas and logging trails in the area that has easy access. At one time we could start in Ky and drive thru va and into tn on trails. and only touching pavement when crossing roads. I dont think its possible to do that now.

Sounds like a good ride! Hate I missed it. Maybe we can get a STLCA run up there some time In the near future.

Yea that would be a good spot....Last two times I went there (with some of the FJ cruiser guys) I went up north of Knoxville, then to Kingsport and then over to Harlan.

As an FYI....there are not many restaurant options in the area (if that matters) and if you want to stay in a hotel about the only solution in Harlan is the Holiday Inn Express which is about a 5 on a ten scale. I did not camp when I was there before so I don't know what camping solutions are available but some of our group did camp. It might be good to ask over on the FJ cruiser forum in the smokey mtn area as I know a couple of guys have apparently camped there.in the area.

We went to the April fools run in 09 and we camped in a big field about 5 min from the trailhead.Their we're about 25 or so people camping there and I believe a few RV TYPE sites were close too. But if you want to hit the trail after you have had a few beers it's not a good idea because once you get on the main road the cops had roadblocks EVERYWHERE!
