Has anybody ever came across a good one, most I've seen look like come a longs. Has anyone ever had much experience with them?

some threads on these here too...

I have the middle size black rat winch. I keep the winch, handle and the cable in a duffle bag. All together it's a heavy mother. I've used it once, to pull my friend's 80 through a patch of melting snow. It's work, but I guess for long pulls it beats using a come-along or hilift.

tirfor and more power puller seem to be the most recommended, "search this forum" using tirfor as a keyword gives a half dozen lengthy threads about the merits of hand winches, brand recommendations, etc.

I have a two Tirfor griphoist hand winches that I inherited several years ago. My grandfather purchased them back in the 60's for heavy industrial pipefitting applications, but they still work great today for my off-road recovery. The down side is that they are quite heavy and awkward to have riding around in the back of your rig. They are also quite expensive and somewhat hard to come by. If you want the best, then the griphoist is probably it, but to be honest I rarely take mine out with me anymore, even though they would be a good backup for my electric winch.

i just use my hi lift. much more dangerous, but i like to live dangerously :D

I just ordered one for my office. They're spendy, but work great!

hand winches are a essential peace of safety equipment and should accompany all electric winches.

what are you going to use when the electric winch fails...?
