The only thing "gold or brass" in a diff are the thrust washers in the carrier and dont have much to do with the actual ring and pinion. If it doesnt make noise when you drive it you should be good to go.

Michael,

Thanks, I appreciate the information. I will put it together and see what happens.

an update......

I am getting done and will have a few more pictures up soon. a few items remain (brake adjustment, gear oil and wiring up my winch and installing the skid plates). Hope to have them done by this weekend wheeling, but travel this week is going to get in the way.

lets try again

Here in the fall

OK, I am having trouble figuring out the coding to imbed pictures in the middle of the message rather at the end. Can someone help out?

Thanks

Once you have uploaded the image simply place your curser (sp?) where you want the image to go, then click on the paperclip and select the image, it should insert where the blinking curser is. Hit preview post to ensure it looks like you want it to.

A Semi-final update to my 4runner upgrade

I think I finally found out how to upload pictures directly into a post, it seems rather tedious the way I am doing it, but it works

Here is the before picture of the truck, first thing to do is remove the running boards
attachment.php

and that was pretty easy, just like the instructions said so I felt ready to attack the rear breather diff modification I read about on yotatech.....
So I started working on the rear diff breather extension
attachment.php

up on ramps to follow the instructions on other sites.
attachment.php
and finally I am getting somewhere with my work

attachment.php

About 2 hours work since I do not really know what I am doing...
So that does it for the rear breather diff mod and on to bigger and better things.
So I finally get a change to go with the crew in my rig to Stonewall falls....

Now we are into fall and I finally decide I have to upgrade the suspension as I have a sag in the rear end and I want to get a winch bumper, etc. etc.... so I figure out a budget

Earlier in the month, I put in an extra fuse block, quick and easy from painless wiring
Here I mounted block on left firewall
attachment.php

Here I ran it through the firewall without drilling another hole

attachment.php

Great, now I need a few things to hook up.....

The holidays are fast here and I am ordering things and the :princess: is wondering what I am doing in the "man cave" either I am reading mud forums or working on my truck.

Te holidays come and pass and I miss the Tellico trip :frown::frown::frown:
and I finally set up a HAM day and get my ducks in a row. At the last minute, I decide to order an elocker axle from a 97 4runner from Blake's Small Car Salvage, Inc. USA-CO(Erie) 1-800-665-4326
for $450 plus shipping ($180) I used car-part.com to find it and got prices from that low end to over $1300. Just a note to everyone, they said that have lots of toyota FJ parts, just to call and check out.
attachment.php

Man, I a really sweating.... I have never done more than a head replacement on a car and that was in the 1980s... and the :princess: is wanting to know what just arrived in the garage as I had to explain what an e-locker was for. I get a puzzled look and ask if "posi-traction" meant anything to her...the :princess: just smiles and says no.... i give up.
Here is a quick look above as I realize it is missing the wiring harness.about a week before the the guys come over. In retrospect, I wish I had painted with rust bullet, or something better than Rustoleum. I will see how it goes.
I locate a winch (perhaps, I should have bought a titan) and found a used bumper that needed some work
Here is the bumper
attachment.php

A sheet sander with 80 grit got most all of the powder coat off. Lucky for me, it has some extension bolted on by some fool that allowed it to be locked in my trusty workmate.
attachment.php

I went to priming in the warm weather and duplicolored the back of the bumper as well with their version of Rhinoliner in a can. I was impressed with the smooth results.

Finally got to paint around X-mas time
attachment.php

and carefully started to cut off the front brackets of my old
attachment.php

bumper with a dremel and a angle grinder
attachment.php

At this point I had to stop and took it to ACC in Atlanta to do some fabrication and welding of faceplates to get the brackets to fit the correct way. They were quite helpful and showed me some of the cool rigs they were working on.... impressive...
Here is a picture of the mangled bracket and the new ones I ordered from ARB
attachment.php

Also, picked up some spare parts and went to the general hardware off of Peachtree in brookhaven to pick up some grade 8.8 metric black phosphate bolts.
attachment.php

(best selection I have ever seen)

Well, Thats it for tonight, I will work on the rest of the buildup tomorrow.

FWIW, attachements go at the end. Best way is to use a photo hosting site (flickr, photobucket, etc) and use the code. Heck some sites all you do is copy the link and it's already coded correctly.

Once you get your posts done I'll delete this. Let me know if I can help. :D

Round 2 update

Well, I had to do some unexpected brake work, but before I get into that Here is a pic of the mangled bracket and the new one side by side.
attachment.php

Well, build day is here and Larry and Jesse show up to help. Its cool outside, but sunny so that is a plus, plenty of light. I drilled my through frame bolt holes and we attached the brackets. We got the bumper on with a bit of loosing of the brackets and everything fit.
attachment.php

THis is the final picture of the bumper with prior to wiring up the winch.
attachment.php

Once that was done, we attacked the front end of the car and dropped the Diff. Three people really made the work go by quick.
attachment.php

Below is the finished front suspension, it was well worth the $50 preassembly fee
attachment.php

Here is the rear end in place, still needs a lot of finish work.

attachment.php

Uh-oh we have a problem... with the elocker, wire has been cut and so I went to the web to see what everyone else had done. It seems I needed several things, the elocker brain, pig tail, pig tail off the frame, abs pig tail with diff lock, factory switch with pig tail. I called Blakes and fortunately they had everything except the factory pig tail on the frame. I ordered one from the elocker itself to the frame, and ordered some 14g 6 conductor wire from somewhere.

attachment.php

I am hesitant to wire up the elocker with out some sense of the wiring instructions so I went on to do other things.
attachment.php

More work on the sway bar extension
[
attachment.php

more work
attachment.php

and finally got around to the issue with the bent skid plates... mine were non-repairable and I did not have time for fabbing up something, so I weighed my options and called Budbuilt and ordered some (2) so I have protection all the way back to the gas tank. Unfortunately, they arrived on valentines day weekend and the wife was not too happy with the attention the truck was getting ....
attachment.php

I also did some repair work to the slightly rusty battery tray with some of the leftover truck bed liner in a can... worked great.
attachment.php

Now, I am done with painting the skid plates, what a pain
And I am ready to install... but I have to weld.
You see, one of the mounting points on the truck for the factory skid plate was bent from the tear off, so I beat it a few times to get it straight and then jacked it up, wire wheeled it and hoped for the best. I have my Dad's old HF wire welder 110v, I have no clue how to use it, so I plug it in and ready the ****py instructions and make a go at it.
Here is my first try... why the spatter??? I think from what I have read, it is inherent in MIGs without gas and yes.... I have a cheap welder.

Please comment on my weld here....
attachment.php

GUess what? it did not hold, so off came the plate and I broke out the MIG again and cranked up the heat and poured it on..
THis time it held.
attachment.php

More bolting them in place
attachment.php

SO now, I am nearly done except the electrical work for the elocker, I had all my parts including a few radio shack ones as well and I put a post out on mud to see if I could get some help, because I could not really understand the wiring.
So, fellow mud members wardameagle and secondgentoyota fan helped me out. WDM, even called me all the way from england to talk for about an hour.
After finally decifering the diagram, I bought 24 hr access to one toyota sites and dowloaded the 1996 wiring diagrams and started tracing things out.
Everything matched except, my truck did not come with a elocker, ABS internal harness, so I had to fabricate a wire to the ABS brain, and fabricated the socket for the bulb with two wires to wire up directly to the harness rather than using the exisitng plugs. The harness was missing the pins for the respective wires and my local dealer was absolutely no help.
Here is the wiring mess
attachment.php

So after about 24hrs I nearly finished
attachment.php

So I try it out.....turn key, push button and..... I get a blinking light in the dash. So I ask some more questions on the forum and find out I had to ground two additional wires.
I get that done, but still no success...., by this time I am really bummed, did I wire something wrong or what?
So, I do what SGTFan said to do and jacked up one tire, spun it, then pushed the button, it still blinked. I went back over to turn the tire and after a slight push, the elocker clicked into place It works!
attachment.php

It seems that, you have to turn the truck slightly and drive forward to get the spines to engage and it works like a charm. so after about $850, I have an elocker. I drove it and all seemed well except the brakes, they seem spongy. (air?)

Here are some final pictures

as I was finishing up some work on the brakes because they do not seem to work well, so I replaced everything (drums, cylinders and shoes) as my drums were out of spec and I was unsure how long the axle sat.
I should be done by tomorrow as I will have my wife help me bleed the brakes. Obviously, I have a few odds and ends to do, but I am ready to roll. Still need to decide on tires though.
So after starting all this work in late October, here we are 6 months later...
I wish I could try it out on the April trip, but the kids spring break takes priority, so let me know if there is a abbreviated trail ride some of you may want to go on between now and then.

Thanks again for everyone's help on the forum and the club, I could not have done it without you all!

well it's late and I'm still up. Happily I finally get to see what my local pharmacist has been up to. Looks great Pillguy and happy to hear about the E-locker, you're gonna love it. ARB looks good too, now all ya need are some MT's and you're all set.

FWIW-I'll be at John's place this Sat working on my own brake issues, I'm sure he wouldn't mind a little extra company.

Andrew,
Very nice write up. I would have enjoyed it more if the pictures had come through. All I got were the white squares with the red "X". I tried right click and selected show picture, but it was unwilling to grant me that request.

Good work and congratulations on wrapping it up.

I will try again, it seems you only can post 3 pics per post.Even though I had listed all of them previously.

Odd
