Hi guys,

I'm trying to separate the half-shaft (CV) from the differential (passenger side) to replace it. Hammered it almost an inch away from diff but still is very tight. Isn't it supposed to slide out afterwards or do I keep hammering till it falls out? Also using pry bars to move it but progress is very slow. Can this thing get frozen inside the diff or it just have to travel a little more?

Thanks,

keep tapping....

Finally got the shaft removed, and understand why it was hard to remove. The inboard tulip stem (just before the spline) is pitted/scored. Picture attached showing the condition of the tulip.

Question: Can I reuse it for the moment, at least till I can replace it when the weather warms up, or will there be side-effect to using it? The balls, cage and race are all in good condition.

You should at least replace the seals in the diff. You might get a fine scotchbrite(1500) and gently clean up axle.

Edit: I did not see that pitting- indicates the bearing race might be toast.

The bearing inside the differential housing? How hard is it to replace that? Also, does that mean I can't reuse the tulip pictured above and need a new one?

Thanks.

Initially you can look into the dif and inspect the roller bearings the axle is riding on: spin each one to inspect ( look & feel) for damage. I haven't replaced bearings in the diff- not sure but it would prob have to come out to replace bearings.

More experience than mine required here to best answer your question.
