So whilst I wait for some front-end bits, I thought I would look at some other drive train anomalies....or lack of knowledge on my part.

Shifting to L4 just doesn't seem possible as the shifter hits the tunnel when moving ever so slightly from N.

Is there a trick or adjustment somewhere. I cannot see anything obvious.

H2 position..

N position....

So no room to move into L4.

I see on top of the transfer case some form of adjuster. I've loosened the clamp bolt. To move the pivot arm on the shaft, do I just push it up off a spline and move one or two splines and repeat?
It just doesn't want to come off and I do not want to force it too hard.
Is there a trick to it?

Note to self.. DO NOT REMOVE THE SELECTOR CLAMP FROM THE TOP OF THE TRANSFER CASE!

The clamp and shaft are keyed to a D shape, so no way to adjust it from that end.

I managed to get it moving, but could then see the selector shaft was starting to slide into the transfer case. almost dropped the bloody thing!
I pulled the clamp completely off and held the shaft. It seemed like nothing would stop the shaft from falling inside the transfer case. So a quick back track, put it back together and just adjusted what I could on the threaded adjuster at the other end...

It gives me just enough now to go into L4, but the shift stick is just about touching the body. Better than what it was.

Anyway, almost seems like the shifter could be bent a little to give more room.

Right, a quick shot of whiskey.

Is there another adjuster on the other end of the shift shaft? It’s been a while since I had mine apart and I can’t remember.

Another option would be to take the shift lever out, heat it up and bend it a bit to give some extra clearance. I need to do that to mine, I can just barely get it in to L4 but it doesn’t always want to stay there.

Unfortunately there is no adjustment for the other end.
It is strange because when in H2 position there is a heap of room for the stick to still move forward further, but no way to utilize it.

It's a 1986, BJ73 Crusier. 3B engine and H55F gearbox. Japanese import into New Zealand.

Mine has a button on the dash for H4...

Once you give her a good clean you can see things proper. Could be a matter of bending it back, but hopefully someone with the same setup shall chime in.
Wonder if anything happens to the geometry when the h4 button is pushed first? Then go to L4. Like a bloody electric window, have to start her first..fandangle gizmo button. (no offence meant)

Ah…ok that makes sense. Mine doesn’t have the button 2H/4H. When you think you have it in N is it? Which position is actually N?
Yeah, it's in N when the shifter moves to the middle position now.
I'll test out L4 once I get the front end back together

You've got the same setup that I've had on all three of my 70's, pretty standard on the JDM spec ones. The shifter only operates the H-N-L transition, 2wd to 4wd is accomplished either with the dash button or by shifting into L, which triggers a switch on the transfer case that automatically engages the front driveshaft, just like the H4 button does. Having the H4 button pressed does not affect the operation of the shift lever.

Thanks for that. Out of interest, to engage H4 when the shifter is in H2 position, can it be done whilst driving? Similar to what I do in my LX470/100 series which is just engaging the central diff lock whilst in motion.

The H4 engagement is not synchronized. It can be engaged / disengaged when moving only slow.
Mine is same engine & gearbox, but fully manual. Mine actually engages / disengages smoothly only when moving. When stationary, it sometimes even gets stuck. (I always wonder how that H4 button vacuum actuator would work in this stuck situation. I prefer manual).
Good Luck Ralf
