Can some one tell me simply if the H55f is the same size inside as the H150 / 151 or anywhere near as strong ?
Or is it somewhere in between the r151 and h150 strength wise ?

Every thread i find seems too end up in a huge amount of confusion and wander off track

The h50/h51/H52 are more compact than the H55, but longer. As to the strength, its hard to say without destructive testing. I doubt there would be much difference.
The r151 shouldnt even be in the same sentence as the others. It started out as an R140 in a 4cyl Supra, then it went into the Hilux 2wd ,then it became a 5 sd, then it went into the LJ70 ,then it went into the KZJ90 then into HZJ78/79/105.
Its a gearbox with a serious mission creep problem.
Its main problem was when it was used by mining and rental companies in Australia. With private ownership and sensible driving you could get good klms out of it.

H55F's are known for popping out of 5th, I've never experienced it but it's relatively well known.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The mounts seem ok..

Pulled this from the TLC FAQ

TLC FAQ - 20.4 Transmission/Transfer

Transmissions/transfer cases popping out of gear are either the shifter binding against the boot, bad motor/tranny mounts or a desparate cry for a rebuild. If it's the latter and it's left for any length of time, severe gear/shift collar damage will result and rebuild costs will increase exponentially.

The 5th gear hub of H55F transmissions are more prone to this problem than the 4spd transmissions. Wear of the hub can start as a result of high loads on the transmission while in 5th gear (lugging up a hill, for example) or as a result of "rowing" back and forth between 5th and 4th while climging a hill to try to maintain speed. Wear of the needle bearings that the 5th counter-gear rides on can also allow the gear to rock slightly which wears its hub. The first sign of trouble is the transmission popping out of 5th gear when not under load.

Guess I'll start keeping an eye out for a backup transmission. :frown:
Any one have a rough idea what a H55F rebuild is going for in Western Canada or the NW USA?

Thanks,

Mine does this.. Gotta keep the revs up when shifting and then the trans needs to stay under load or it pops out..

How many kms were on the boxes you blew up ?

My 94 had about 180k on it. First reverse lost a tooth, then it got stuck in 3rd and destroyed that gear.

My 98 had about 120k, the cluster shaft bearings went and destroyed the box. This was an ex contractor ute so maintenance may have been neglected

So did the HZJ 70series get the h55f and the R151 at different times ?? When did they stop using the H55f in the 70 series ,...

Edit... Looking a megazip it seems the r151 was used from 1999 on .
so did the H150 ever get used before the vdj engines , or is that when it was introduced ?

Sorry for the thread jack.. but, is there a known fix for the 5th gear pop out? Or is this a full rebuild situation?

It depends on what is causing it to pop out.
If it just kind of falls out when there is no load on the gearbox, it is most likely the detent spring. To fix that you need to remove the gearbox and take off the cover and replace the detent springs. Ive never done it so consult a manual. Or you can hold it in with a bungee cord.

The other reason is when 5th gear has been abused, this requires dismantling of the box. By the time you are in this deep , its only a few hundred for bearings etc to rebuild the whole thing. And of course there will be the t/case as well.

mine was popping out of 1st , but the nylon bush on the end of the gear stick was chooked .... That was $20 and 20miniutes too fix.
If your gear stick feels real sloppy in nuteral its worth trying ...

I was hoping for an answer like this one, I do need to change out the shifter sheet.. My from zuksoffroad has an upgraded version but he’s not sure if it will work.. I guess I’ll just order an OEM one.. unless anyone knows of a good aftermarket upgrade

Does anyone have any experience with the effects of worn rivets/pins/pivots that the shifter attaches to? I found one reference on an old thread to someone planning on fixing them to improve gear selection, but no follow up.

My h55f gearbox can be reluctant to go into first when stationary, worse when hot. It moves half way then it feels like it's pushing against something solid. Going back to neutral or into 2nd then going again with a faster harder motion mostly fixes it. Changing into 2nd gear when moving also sometimes feels reluctant/unhealthy.

The shifter bushing and seat were reasonably good, but I just had the box rebuilt by a gearbox shop because the input shaft had in/out play, so the bushing and seat are now brand new. No change. I queried the worn pins with the shop but they said that wouldn't be a problem, that the worn bearings were probably the cause. The problem is identical after the box being rebuilt.

As well as the pins being wobbly, the collar on the shifter that engages on them is slightly damaged/bent like someone has tried to pry it out with a screwdriver rather than turn it to disengage from the pins.

I'm planning on fixing the pins using these threaded replacements Gear Lever Retainer Pin Kit suitable for Landcruiser 40 60 70 80 gearbox housing and it looks like the collar that engages with the pins is available as a stand alone part for the h42 shifter, and I think that it will work/fit identically on my h55f.

I just wanted to know if anyone had experience with the those pins causing problems, because there's heaps of other stuff I need to allocate time and money to fixing on the truck, but this rises up the priority list if it will definitely fix the problem.

Edit: I just noticed the same site sells a kit with the collar/bush/seat for very cheap price. But it's more about time than money, unless I try to drill and tap the holes in situ with rags and grease stuffed down the shifter hole to stop swarf falling in the gearbox
