going through some basics on my new to me '85 FJ60 with H55 5 spd….The shifter seat threads I've reviewed show a blue ring….I have a black rubber ring below the shifter….The area shift seat (inside the gear box) is wet with gear oil….wondering if the blue ring is preferable? I am experiencing occasionally difficult shifting but wanted to start with the easy stuff first

The black rubber ring seat is contoured to the shifter bottom and does not feel spongy or anything but I'm wondering if it is compressed or makes the shifter sit lower than intended….

….Next up is clutch slave/pedal adjustment review……

The shift lever seat that originally came with a brand new H55F 25 years ago was blue.
The new one available today is blue too. Looks exactly like the original.

Maybe yours was blue and has discolored to black, or it is an undocumented alien. Either way, I would replace it.

That looks like a 4 speed shifter. There is a difference between the two, look at the one @Joe_E pictured.

That IS the 4 speed shifter as klinetime said... Yikes!
No wonder it was shifting weird.
The 5 speed tip has a round knob.

Strange though, cuz a new H55F comes with a new shifter... hmm.
Can't imagine why that thing is in there...

You have to order the shifter separately.

I heard there was at one time an adapter ball for the end of the 4 speed shifter to convert it to one that would work.

I'm in the process of trying to procure the correct parts but wonder if my black seat is the "adapter"???? mentioned above (post #8)….the black seat is the same diameter as the tube the shifter goes in through….The photo above (post #2) with the blue ring makes it look as though the blue ring is smaller in diameter and set down further in the tube…..Just curious…...

the black seat used to be blue; the adapter piece rumored to exist would be a small plastic deal that would snap onto the end of the shifter itself and fill the space in the shifter socket in the top cover, but I am not certain such adapter exists. best fix with this would be to get the right shifter and seat and bushing, or I'd be happy to swap you out for my H42- it shifts just fine and you could even keep your old shifter- heck I'd toss in mine for good measure. feel free to pm me where I can come pick this 5er up at. Cheers!

the blue seat is only for the H55f or does it also get used on the h42s?

Great stuff Georg,

Many thanks for the info. PM sent…..I have a BJ74 (with an H55) I may borrow the shifter from to see if it improves shifting in the 60….Also very curious now to see what condition the seat & nylon cup look like on my Bj74….

:steer::wrench:

pulled the shifter from JDM '87Bj74…..blue ring was there but whats left of the nylon plug stayed in the tranny

Meanwhile in the Fj60 I'm getting the kinks worked out on a hybrid "H110" tranny…..yup 2 count 'em TWO five speeds…..

Where are the H55 trannys labelled? I'd like to figure out just what 5 speed got put into the FJ60…..BTB Products did the vortec conversion a couple of owners ago and the receipts are a little vague but there is clearly an invoice that includes "heated and bent to correct angle for clearance and then installed transmission shifter"…The photo above shows the shifter from my BJ74 installed and not having any clearance issues…..Perhaps because they used the 4 speed shifter they had to mod it for clearance?

They probably bent the 4-speed shifter so it would not hit the dashboard or something like that. Never having seen a 5 speed in person I'm not 100% on that, but your 4spd shifter looks mega bent compared to mine. Talking about the portion inside the shift boot that isn't black.

The 5-speeds had a white decal with the part number and some other info on the top cover but that's about it.

You should be able to remove the bushing with a pair of snap ring pliers.
