Hi thanks for adding me on. Recently purchased a 06 gx470 with 299k miles all stock no signs of abuse but some neglect. I have read alot of your post so greatly appreciate the knowledge here. It has some needed maintenance. Drivers side valve cover, front suspension parts bushings almost all are shot. The cam seals appear to be leaking but hard to tell. I pulled back the timing belt cover and see a little oil but not much. It was loose so it could have been from the driver's side valve cover getting in. Steering rack is leaking. I started changing the fluids diffs an 75-90 in transfercase used SAE 80w-90 lucas since I could not get mobile lube in time for the differentials. It was serviced at lexus up until 215k miles. Trans fluid was exchanged there shows 12quarts in service history at 200k.

I saw a few post where members bought aftermarket steering racks an wondering if anyone has any input first hand on them as a new oem one is around $1000 vs $300 from AAE or Bbb on Rockauto. I plan on changing the HP line with Gates around $200 an oem reservoir around $150 and a filter to make sure the new rack doesn't get contaminated.

I’ve used a Lares aftermarket rack from Rockauto. Works fine and stock steering feel remains.

I have a Cardone reman from Rock Auto. It's been in for a year with no issues. There is no need to replace the HP line or reservoir unless they are leaking or badly gunked up. Just clean them and reinstall.

Worried the new rack will get contaminated. This one has been leaking for a long time. Keep reading people have alot of issues with aftermarket so now I am leaning towards a low mileage 07-08 4runner from a junkyard with oem rack.

I would not put a new aftermarket rack on - it will be Chinese. Reman is an OE Toyota rack with some machining and new seals. Mine has been fine and it was 1/3 the cost of a new OEM rack. I also used a Cardone reman rack on a Subaru and it's been fine for 3 years so far.

If you are worried about contamination install a Magnefine inline filter. I have pics of my setup in my build thread. Even if you replace the HP line and reservoir, there are still all of the LP and hard lines that may harbor contamination. The filter should catch just about everything.

If you're already pulling the rack I would pull the entire PS reservoir out of the truck and spray it down with brake clean and make sure the mesh screen in there is squeaky clean. It can get clogged with junk and make hard for the fluid to be sucked back to the return of the pump. That makes the rack whine under load due and is semi common in some other Toyotas with the same setup.

I found one on ebay. 08 4runner with 40k miles on it out Louisiana.$180 out the door shipped.Going to buy a new reservoir instead of taking a chance with old one my inderstanding is the mesh filter gets clogged up. A new oem is going for $150 or so. Aftermarket is less than $80.

I think I got lucky to find this on Ebay. 100% feedback seller. Picture an vin of the 08 4runner it came out of with 40k miles. I received it yesterday for $180 delivered. Spent about hour cleaning it up.Noticed toyota uses Toyoda as a stamp. I hope this doesn't fail prematurely. I have more confidence in a used oe then aftermarket or rebuilt.
