Having a tire hanging out back or not, you'll still be replacing something, whether it's a bumper and/or a door.
If your not wanting the full metal look for a tire hanger AND if the insurance buys into it, the Prado door hanger looks nice, albeit, you will not have the lifting rear window an longer, if you ever use it.

I use mine a lot. And don't want to lose rear visibility.

That is something I wish more vendors would consider in their design for rear tire hangers, KEEP THEM LOWER!! Lowering the tire on the back has minimum impact on departure angle.
I absolutely agree and hate that I lose 30% of my rear view from my spare tire and almost the rest of the view from my jerry cans and traction boards. (But that's on me...)

Maybe, maybe not. I love how much extra space it gave me inside. You can't really plan for being rear-ended, so I don't think I should compromise on the things I like in order to accommodate for that.

Anytime you make a modification to a vehicle, and that includes larger tires where a spare no longer fits in the stock location, there are ramifications. Any mechanic that has been around the block will tell you that and why most experienced ones are against "Mods" of any type. What ever you gain you also loose someplace. But most of us can't help ourselves me included . But also why I refuse to go with a tire that doesn't fit a spare in the stock location.

Came in handy the other day when the damn barn door froze on me and I couldn't even open it. I'm not a fan of the barn door had to move the spare tire on the tongue of my trailer to the bed tied and locked down because of it. Thankfully the Polaris has 14" of ground clearance and I can drive up and over it.

When I took this picture noticed his barn door and mentioned that I am not a fan of it. Said he loved his and mentioned I had thought about doing the conversion carrier to the rear door but then couldn't use the rear lift window. He immediately said that would be a hard no for him he uses his rear window too much and that would be a show stopper. No way am I doing a swing out tire carrier let's double down on a barn door with basically another one on a DD?! No.

And need the back for 2 dog crates sometimes. Or one crate and a flat tire

No way in hell I am running anywhere without a spare tire.

Lot of options available to us which is a good thing. We all have different needs and not all are the same. For me I'll just scrape bottom if I have to with the spare also scraping LOL. Having the Lux I can bump the ass end up a couple of inches when needed, it does help.

well... ahem... this one is a hit to the pride. a few weeks back i was driving to VT in a snow storm and lost it on the highway. it went from kinda visible pavement to a few inches stacked up in a flash and i was going a hair quicker than i should have been. the stock deulers in the rear were on the edge of needing replacement. went over a bridge connection bump. it was all just enough of a combination to send the rear going out to my left and never to return. looking back, i should have had CDL on, that might have given me the front wheel power to save it. the rear kept rotating clockwise as i drifted off to the right side of the road, went off sideways with the rear facing in the direction of travel, and must have done some pretty sweet trick of a roll and spin (mctwist? misty flip?) because I rolled it and ended up with the nose facing in the direction of travel again. i was the only one involved.

i got very lucky and walked away with minor bruising. the truck took it like a champ. all of the side panels look basically untouched. i'm sure the snow softened the blow. the roof caved where it meets the windshield through about half way down the roof, but only down the middle. the "frame" where the doors are didn't collapse much. no windows smashed, though due to the roof cave the sunroof is propped open. it scooped a significant amount of snow into the cabin during the roll.

just got the official word that they are totaling it. i am looking to get another GX, especially due to the way it protected me in that. in the market for moving up to a 2022 i think.

given i know more about the truck i'm looking for certain features, but i want to poll here: what would be your must have or must avoid features if you were to buy another 2021+ GX?

right now i'm trying to get a blackline, would be great to have Mark Levinson, and the 2022 gives the carplay. i like the bench seat versus captain's chairs. staying away from air bags.

what's something i should really try to find as an option?

I wanted a blackline but ended up buying a new premium plus cheaper than a used blackline. I also wanted the rear bench, but the captians chairs are fine, and I really like the better stereo and other features. I'm not sure about the current used market, but for me the premium plus was the best bang for my buck.

Glad you are OK! It seems to be a common theme for those that get in a wreck, the GX is built like a tank and they are able to walk away. Sorry about your rig though, that hurts.

My vote in a poll isn't going to work for you as I would only get another Lux with rear bags. If something happened to my 19 and I was looking for a 21+ it would be another Lux. But would have to have the off road package because you can't add MTS and CC to them after the fact at least from my understanding. Plus you get the OEM transmission cooler and full gas tank skid, light duty as it is.

In 4-5 years I will start looking at lightly used LX 700h Overtrail's. In part because they are bagged both fore and aft. And already have the off road package. Between now and then push came to shove it would be a GX Lux with off road package from the factory.

I was lucky and almost had the same thing happen twice, why i bought dedicated snow tires. Road maintenance in winter is almost non existent in Wyoming.

I didn't think i had seen as many people running OEM bags and loving it, but maybe i was looking in the wrong places. good call on the off road package for MTS and CC. i'll keep that in mind.

though not dedicated snows, I have a set of Wildpeak A/T4W sitting in my basement. my wheel shipment from Japan got delayed so I hadn't had the chance to mount them yet. wheels just showed up last week heh... oh what timing of it all.

I put Nokian snow tires on both trucks since we each commute 400-600 miles a weeks.

Even though I have that big 'ol spare, and jerry's hanging off the back, I still use the rear window. We use it to stick surfboards out the back. Yeah, I can't open it with the spare in place, but I just swing out the tire carrier and open it. Close the tire carrier, stick the surfboard with the tail resting on top of the spare and we're surf'n!

Yeah, I can't open it with the spare in place, but I just swing out the tire carrier and open it. Close the tire carrier, stick the surfboard with the tail resting on top of the spare and we're surf'n!

I'm going with that it is not your daily driver so you don't have to mess with it every day. Or live on a hill with a slope and have to fight gravity to open it. Make that 2 of them in your case. Now closing them isn't bad that thing called gravity works and works well LOL.

I am planning on mounting a little utility winch in my next tire cubby. I can use it to pull the tire back up. I'll need that once I get older and have larger tires. I plan on engineering my way around my arthritis.

Ha-ha! Actually it is my DD. Big shopping, (read: Costco), yeah I'm having to swing out both the tire and the door. But for most grocery shopping which is usually not as much, we just swing the bags in the middle seat.
If I am parked off camber, leaning on the passenger side or pointing up hill, the barn door is fine, but it's a grunt trying to close the swing-out which weighs a couple hundred pounds (35" tire and wheel, 5 gal water, large ammo can full of heavy recovery gear, HiLIft, antennas).

Love the swing door. It doesn't give me divots in my skull like the corners of lift gates seem to. Plus, I installed a super handy drop down table on it for camping, can't do that on a lift gate.

Before I bought the GX I thought I would hate the barn door. I actually like it a lot. I really don't find it inconvenient at all. I also installed a table on mine, and a storage bag, plus it has the factory compartments to store tools and such. It's a more efficient space for sure.

After the dogs were taken care of and kenneled then me and hunting buddy would usually have a seat and have a shot sometimes 2 of some brown liker. Rain or not. Now not so much but the thin lip works for a short time as a seat. As long as it isn't raining.

Getting the dogs out of the back with a trailer hooked up and the barn door blocking the other side should be in the agility trials, good thing Tollers like and do well in agility.
