I'm itching to go for a drive this weekend. Maybe I'll try to find the last remnants of crusty spring snow, maybe go see some wildflowers, definitely get off the pavement and away from the crowds for a day.

Carizzo Plain apparently isn't as lush as in years past, but that's usually my go-to spot for flower watching. I haven't been to Hungry Valley OHV in a couple of years and Gorman usually has some nice poppy blooms. Mt. Piños is still showing some snow at the top, so I might even pull off a hat trick of snow/flowers/wheeling, all in one day.

Any suggestions from my SoCal neighbors?

Antelope Valley looks like it'll need a few more weeks to get to full swing, but its worth a drive when the poppies are in full bloom.

I usually keep an eye on the wildflower reports here

I was just on that site yesterday, which is where I'd read about Carrizo's lackluster bloom this year. At this time last year, it was popping! These are from 4/23/23:

The very first orange poppies were just getting started when I drove through Gorman and the Grapevine last month. I'm sure there's plenty out there, just hard to compare to our recent "super bloom".

I believe San Gorgonio and/or Mt Baldy still have snow and some great hiking within the last week.

Doing some install research. Anybody know what pump this is and if it’s just connected with a hose or if there are any other considerations when removing it. They skip over it so I assume not but wanted to make sure.

There should be a timestamp in the link but it’s at like 18:11

Mission accomplished! It was a great day in the mountains around Frasier Park & Gorman that checked all the boxes. I found everything I needed: snow, sand, rocks, hill climbs, and a healthy dose of mud. I saw a white GX with all the trimmings (bumpers, RTT, etc.) at Hungry Valley OHV that looked a lot like your rig. Wish I could remember the personalized plates, but if you're on here, "Hi." I was the guy crossing the main road at Power Line.

Wasn't me. I was doing my Army reserve thing Saturday, and Sunday the family and I went and checked out the new Bass Pro Shop here in Irvine that just opened 3 weeks ago.

Ooh. I've never been to a Bass Pro Shop in California. Or a Cabela's, for that matter.

As expected, the flower blooms were a bit weak this year, but still beautiful in their own right. Nice little clusters here and there with the Poppies doing the best around Gorman.

Still worth a trip, but mostly as an excuse to get out and drive some trails.

I stayed active and started drawing my pension in 96, took terminal leave and retirement ceremony was Dec. 95. Was working in civies the next day, bit of a culture shock LOL. Navy.

Hopefully you will get a Scheels soon in your neck of the woods. They are what Cabelas used to be before Bass Pro came in and totally destroyed them. There is a thread on Upland Journal that I posted in a week ago where all of us old bird hunters that run dogs beating ourselves up busting brush to bring home a couple of oz. of meat hang out. And lament about the good old days.

Lot of talk about the Cabelas Gun Libraries, the old ones and that was what started that thread. This is not the place to get into it here but they usually had some really fine doubles bird shotguns. And gear that was top notch unlike BP.

They even threw a wood stove in for free. Not a 3 dog quality one but it works. Especially with a gutted ventillator as a heat exchange never could find a tree to plug it into where I camp

Cabelas Guide 3 burner stove they are built for use in a blind. Or camping or large gatherings of like minded individuals. With the Cabela's high wall cast iron griddle that weighs ~50 pounds. Takes awhile to get hot but once it does you are off to the races. Because bacon

Homemade bacon of course

Scheels helps take some of the sting out of the Cabelas\Bass Pro merger. Got a letter last week saying that I haven't used my Cabela's Club card in a year and if I didn't use it they were going to close my account on July 2. They can have it.

Okay, first you have to STOP with the bacon! If you keep that up, I'll be needing a new keyboard from ALL the drool!!!
Second, thanks for your Navy service! 🫡
When we go up to Tahoe, we sometimes go to the Scheels in Reno, NV. Oh my GOSH! That place is crazy!
They have a full size Ferris wheel inside! They have little sections of animatronics of famous people that move and talk, an incredible aquarium and more. Even if you're not there to shop, just taking the kids/grand kids there is like a mini-event for them.

But even going to the Bass Pro Shop was pretty cool.

@r2m thank YOU for your service! There is also Dicks Sporting Goods started by a gentleman named Dick, of course. In Binghamton in Upstate NY about 60 miles East of where I grew up. Used to be a strictly hunting and fishing store Dick would be rolling in his grave he knew what they have become today.

The Herter's catalog was better than the Sears Wishbook back in the day. Everything was guaranteed not to rust, rot, mold, or mildew; and was personally tested on five continents by Jacques Herter Junior. They were located in some far off place called Minnesota in the middle of the Country where Paul Bunyan lived.

Requesting assistance, fellow 460 owners...

Was under my truck today taking pictures of something and noticed this wire sticking out of the passenger side frame rail. Tried tracing it to no avail... thinking maybe it's a frame ground?

@JDUB fab took a look at his 460 but didn't see anything similar. Anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks guys...

Looks like one of those captive nuts (nut welded to a wire) for mounting something to the frame through an existing hole

Did you install your skids?

Example:

View attachment 3615922
A shop did them for me. That definitely seems like what it could be. Is the wire just to help positioning?

It should. What brand of skids do you have? Probably the nut to that bolt holding the crossmember piece in for skid under your Torsen

Talons Garage. I don't believe the captive nuts were included with the hardware, but I wouldn't be surprised if the shop used them to make things easier. Going to take a look at it again tonight now that my headlamp is charged...
