Originally we were looking at 100's but since a local dealer had a GX, we took a look. This is the first awd vehicle we have driven, it is a 03 with all options. Only thing I noticed was a front end whine that was speed sensitive, is this a characteristic of the awd or is something wrong? I did notice a slight noise from the transfer case shifter but it went away after about 10 minutes of driving. It had 139k miles and has been regularly serviced by Lexus. Thoughts?

Does not sound normal to me. When the :princess: and I took one for a drive I do not remember hearing anything like that.
Some things you will want to know about the newer vs. older GXs..
- 05 was a move to VVTI (increase gas mileage and power slightly)
- 08 move to add auxillary port in truck for music
- 04 (I think) was the introduction of KDSS

Other than that I think most things have been pretty standard. Lots of good info here and over on the ClubLexus forums.

Whine in the front is a problem. No question.

I thought so as well. I spoke with the dealership owner and he said it was related to the 4.7 and that his Sequoia done the same, I know that is not the case! I also spoke with the previous owner who owns a automotive shop and owned it for about 2years and he said he heard the noise as well but attributed it to the awd. Needless to say we are going to pass!
