This last trip I was on, made me choose to have both in the truck. It is much easier to get NOAA weather reports from the CB than it is with ham. With HAM you need to access the relay stations in your area, with CB, you just need the CB monitoring NOAA

And there are a lot of people who haven switched over.

I have a cheap Baofeng UV5R handheld and have talked to people off repeaters who are 70 miles away. Typically my distance to the repeater is under 10 miles and line of site. Baofeng's are unlocked radios and work great. Though not licensed to do so, they can transmit on FRS/GMRS 440 and MURS 2M unlicensed channels; as well as other licensed channels such as Marine and Police Emergency Analog bands.
