Gutting the Airpump

I am doing all the little cheap/free stuff this weekend - timing, valves, carb, tune up. The cat is already gone and a full desmog is on the board. For right now Im tired of hearing the pump huffing so I want to gut it out. Anything I should know about gutting the airpump?

pretty simple stuff, pull it apart, retain just the bearings, and throw the rest out....did the same to mine.

Maybe get new bearings if yours feel scratchy...

buy an idler

Jim C. has an idler for just under $100. I know that ain't free, but it will give you a lot more space in the area. It works with the stock tightening brackets.

why do you gut it, why not just cut the belt and keave it????

The belt runs around the water pump aswell. If you cut it... better start thinking about the SBC upgrade!

well. you COULD do that, but it'd make driving a bit harder, as that belt also runs the water pump....

just get a double pulley for your alternator and run the water pump off of that. get a new one from checker/kragen, they come with doubles, swap pulleys and return the new alt, tadaa!
