Growling Rear Drivetrain Need Help with Pics and Video

I swapped in another differential this afternoon. That fixed the problem!

The old diff does not turn smoothly. Small chunks of metal are missing from the side of both carrier bearing inner races on the old diff. Perhaps the result of another problem.

I'll post pics tomorrow.

Any idea how this could happen?

When turning the flange on the old diff, there is resistance about every 1/8th to 1/4 turn (I'm sure this was the noise we heard). I don't see any damage to the ring and pinion. I assume the resistance is in the pinion bearing or something in the carrier bearings.

The ring and pinion look good to me:

I'm very curious how this happened.

Perhaps I'll take this diff apart.

unwired; did you figure out why your carrier bearings failed or find anything else broken or loose??

Hello everyone...Came up with this thread as I'm researching on a problem...exactly the same as UNWIREADVENTURES ... I'm a new owner LX450 96 and new member here on MUD from los angeles area....I purchased the vehicle as is with the growling sound...previous owner stated problem with front axles (CV joint , spindle replaced ) which is under fixing right now in the shop...mechaninc and I test drive the vehicle before this....and we can hear the sound from the inside of the truck ... we are trying to eliminate the problem one at a time....so we are doing the front axles right now....I suspect the sound also coming from the rear ...but we will find out this week once the axles service in the front is finished.... as I was reading your conversations...I was trying to figure out what you guys mean with the 3RD member? ( from the rear) ....please if you can educate me....I would appreciate all your help...this site is very helpful ....thanks a lot guys.

1) Third member's another term for differential.

2) You can lock the center diff and remove either the front or rear driveshaft, then go for a drive to isolate the noise.

thanks for the reply ...will try that...will update for results
