Grinding noise while driving

Probably need more info than that. What were you doing, in 4wd, giving it gas, what gear, flat road?

Its happened on flat road around town and climbing a hill on the highway. It seems to happen when its given gas, but not necessarily. I'm not sure what gear it was, I'd guess third?

Edit: I should also probably mention that it started on the way home from a short trip to Tennessee

My 88 sounded like I had a stick caught in the front tire and a rattle once in a while. Turned out to be the upper steering bearing (truunion?) in the right knuckle was gone.

Motor mount maybe?

You're not alone. I seem to be having the same issue. I guess I'll be looking for the problem tonight..

I looked under the truck after work to see if I could find anything loose. Checked the driveshafts, steering links, sway bars, ect. and nothing was moving/seemed worn out. The front drive shaft had a small amount of play in it, but I wouldn't think that would be the issue, since the noise is in 2wd.

Edit: Just drove it around the neighborhood in 4wd and the noise increased. The play in the front driveshaft also went away when I put it in 4x4

Could it be something with the exhaust system rattling or vibrating? Idk, just throwing ideas out there. Couldn't hurt to check other things out to be sure

could be the catalytic converter rattling around.

I have been having intermittent grinding noise on acceleration and discovered that my DS motor mount is broken. This allows the motor to twist enough to cause contact with the fan shroud.
Check to see if your fan is chewed up.
