After looking for used 4-runners and GX 470s, my wife and I found a couple LX470s at similar price points, albeit a few years older. We would up grabbing this 2001 LX 470 with 160k miles for right at 10K and have loved it so far. We've had it for almost a year, and haven't made any major modifications yet. I appreciate the threads on this website though, helped with an AC leak on the passenger floor mat. Other than changing the timing belt (hadn't been done in >10 years), maintenance has been smooth sailing. I made a platform (see below) and we've taken it camping several times. My only regret is I designed the platform with the rear seats taken out to increase headroom, and removing/replacing the seats is more of a pain than I thought it would be. The hex bolts like to bind up. It's currently my wife's daily driver, but eventually it will become a dedicated beach/trail rig. Hope to make more posts as we inevitably make a few changes.
