I have read through the gps posts and have found a few possible options for a good unit but I am very specific in what I am looking for. Anyone have a suggestion for the requirements?

I want a handheld that can do turn by turn directions with maps for my wife when she is highway driving. The type that says or indicates a right turn in 2 miles then indicates the turn so she doesn’t get lost.

The second use for the GPS is one that follows traditional GPS usage that can do waypoints, UTM, and longitude and latitude for trail driving (I usually use topo maps with the coordinates on it). I must be able to input data. If it has built in topo maps the better.

So: turn by turn mapping for directions on the highway
Traditional long/lat gps navigation for trail trips.
Under 300 bucks.

Anyone have a good suggestion. I was thinking the Garmin GPSMAP® 60

Not for sure, but I think the Garmin Quest or Quest II can do all or most of that. It will even talk to you when in the rig.....

It looks cool, but what I have read doesn't say if it can do normal GPS longitude and latitude mapping. I want to know where I am and compare that to a topo. Does it work that way?

I vote for the Garmin GPSMAP60 series. I love mine, does pretty good on the turn-by-turn and can give the lat/long coords and pretty much everything you asked a GPS to do. The GPS will be below your budget, but then you will have to buy the city navigator and topo as well.

I know that it gives coordinates, but I am kinda GPS stupid, so I am not sure what you are looking for.

I hear the Garmin 60CS & CSX would do what yer lookin for...But one of them would put you over $300, especially by the time you get a mount, cable, and city navigator for the turn by turn for her, and the mapsource topo for what you want...You'ld probably be pushing $550-$600 by the time yer done.

I'm pro-Magellan (& hate Garmins), but my girlfriend bought me a Magellan Crossover, and it was a POS!!...Ended up returning it...I've heard lots of issues with those.

Care to elaborate? What did you replace it with?

I bought a Garmin Etrex Legend CX and have been happy with it. Does all the things you are asking for and is a little cheaper than some of the other options.

Most of the garmin's will give you turn by turn directions, but if you want to use long/lat and other maps you might have you use a computer with it. I have that set up in my truck, it was not that expensive, a little bulky. My Wife loves it, I got her a TomTom which works fine, but she say it sucks compared to Garmin. I got an old Garmin off of ebay for about 150-200 dollars, make sure it has the most up to date dvd maps. I got a old 10 inch tablet PC for about 200 also on ebay. you can use a old laptop if you want it just makes it alot mor bulky. You will need to download garmins "Enroute" which will give you turn by turn directions plus points of interest and which one is closest. It will also allow you plug in other garmin maps such as canadian maps and topo maps. Plus it will also allow you to find a spot based on long/lat coordinates.

Check out my set up:

I hope this helps, if not it gives some other options to consider.
