on the road again....
I'm preparing for my 6000 mile trip out to see Jason at TT.

few more miles for break in I guess.....Lol

It took me what felt like forever to get through my 500 miles... 2 months of weekend driving. Finally wrapped it up last weekend, changed diff fluid and am enjoying the heck out of my reborn rocket of a 200.

congrats - it was a long week of short trips when I did mine !

yeah...it feels good to finally have the gears and lockers done. My build is slowly coming together. :)

Thinking about doing that Tundra conversion now so I can run larger tires.....at least 34.5s anyway.

Whenever I finally get mine done, I have a feeling I'll OCD out and be literally waiting on a chair for cool-down after slow runs...and get through it ASAP. ;)

I'm definitely not OCD... more go with the flow, and even I was a bit anal about how I drove it. Letting it loose now though. You gotta do it ASAP. It's just an amazing change, and that's coming from a previous skeptic.

Lol....yeah I know. I have to admit I'm feeling a little giddy. Getting the 4.88's and lockers both done on my build finally is a big step. Feels good to have that out of the way.
Next I'm gonna get the parts for a Tundra long travel conversion I think...and finally have at least 34's on it.

No it isn't being too nosey. Don't mind at all.

Arb lockers run $940 each- so that is x 2.
Nitro 4.88 gearset and install kit cost me $1540
Compressor for the lockers was $250
Then I paid about $1500 in labor costs since I didn't do the work myself.

There may be another $100 or so that I've missed but sitting here looking at my receipt that was what it cost me here in Houston.
My mechanic dropped the diffs and then sent them to Nitro Gear and Axle. (in Cali) It saved me a pretty good chunk of coin because they were running a special. So that is pretty much how my deal went down....

Thanks for that reply. That labor number is what I was wondering about. I’m comfortable doing a lot of my own work but I’m never opened a diff in my life so if I do it I’ll let someone with some experience do it.

You can save some scratch by pulling the diffs yourself and bringing them to get lockered/geared. It's relatively easy.

Unless you're familiar or comfortable with dialing in gear backlash and/or have the proper tools, I wouldn't attempt doing it yourself. Improperly installed gears can cost you many dollar signs.

My set up was roughly 5200 all in - gears, ARB's and ARB dual compressor plus adding the cool SLEE custom old school switch panel and rotary knob.... agree it's well worth spending to have it done right and not worrying about it..... I fried a rear end in my old FJ45 doing it myself....

yep....what @TonyP and @RS6tofj80 said. :)

Many of us here have spent a lot of time under cars wrenching for years. But gears and lockers was not somewhere I wanted to try to save $1000 or $1500. Peace of mind is worth a lot. :)

Also Many of us are at different levels of mechanical ability. For instance one thing I excel at is pressing down on the go pedal with no fear or common sense at all. Lol......

How much labor cost was that?

I should add that my labor costs included install of my BP 51 suspension , dual battery setup & IBS controller, and various switches.

Since I had my truck already in the shop.....then I came down with "one foot in the grave flu" I just turned my guy loose on my rig and did several things. It worked out really well in my case since I was so damn sick anyway.

So you did Gears, lockers, IBS/Dual, compressor AND full suspension for only $1500 labor???? Wow! That is insanely cheap.

Maybe I need to drive to Houston...and then hang with my brother for a couple weeks of 500 mile break-in!!

No...sorry.....just went over my receipt. I have about $2500 in labor total for everything I did:

Snorkel install
Dual battery system and IBS management system
BP-51 system install w/SPC upper control arms
general switches
blue sea fuse block
gears and lockers
compressor install

Oh it also included a loaner vehicle. He had a cool 4frunner I used while he had my rig :)
