Has anyone ever used the Goodyear Wrangler military tires that look like this:

And if you have how do they perform???

I haven't seen those, nor can I find them online!! Where did you find them?

I believe they are called Goodyear Wrangler RT II or RT 2, if you try searching that some stuff comes up. These tires were used on the hummers in the military, im not sure if they still are tho.

There is a reason the Military used them on Hummers. They are so hard, bullets bounce off of them. :)

They don't suck if you want to wheel on the cheap and they were already on the H1 rims you bought, but compared to nearly ANY commercially available offroad tire, they stink because the rubber compound is very hard and not sticky.

I have thought about running these just for on road duty to save wear on trail tires. Given that rubber compound and sidewall flex shouldn't be all that important. Finding a set of wheels for them on the cheap may prove to be a bigger issue though, as I don't want to fork out the $$$ to have hummer wheels recentered.

Sorry if I am hijacking a thread here

i have these tires on my fj55 but never dorve it yet its a project and i whant to knowi if they are any good on the trails

off topic a bit on the whole tire thing......... BUT do you think at military auctions they would have rims and tires??? I dont know at all anyone??

I'm in the Navy, and there are auctions all over the place. We always go to our base DRMO and see what they have laying around. Check with your local base(may be a few miles depending) and ask them. Or you can go online and check around.

There is a guy on pirate(I think his name is 100dollarman), that slings these things out of socal like crack!!!

I had them on my 1995 Humvee H1 diesel with ARB lockers, THey performed well, and are just as tough as Goodyear MTR. Bullets will NOT bounce off of them (there is a reason for Magnesium run flat rings in side the 2 piece H1 wheels. I ran them for about 20k, good tire, but not the best by any means. I now run the IROK radials on my H1 with WICKED results. Dont be scared to buy them, good all around tire.

There are 6-lug 16.5" steel wheels available through Summit and others. Of course, with the tapered bead, it makes it difficult to air down below 15 PSI. But I'm not sure airing down would be effective with these, anyway.

Last year a guy had these on his J33p. He aired down as far as he could, but got no flex out of them. I litterally had to drag him almost everywhere that day.

You bring up a great point. These tires are stiff. No, stiffer than that, really.
Use em with beadlocks, run em a 5 psi, and they'll give enough.

We were on a lot of snow and he didn't have beadlocks, so I'm sure that would help. I usually run my MT/Rs at about 3 lbs on the snow to give my FJ40 the footprint it needs.

I have those tires on my 55 with the H1 wheels and Mag. Runflats and I am currently looking for an economical way to break down the 2pc wheel and change the tires out to something else. The carcass will not bend much even at 8psi and when it does, WHAM, right into the runflat. I call the center rib of this particular tread pattern "The Anti-Traction Spine". It seems to keep the rest of the lugs away from any traction providing surface even when aired down. My friends at IPOR grooved the heck out of the spine and side bars and it seemed to help... some... And as others have mentioned, they are HARD. Many tires will get gummy when you put the ponies to them but these just smoke and chip away. They do fine for forest service roads and mild trails + They are rough on the pavement + The center rib follows grooves in concrete +They do decently in sand + They are not sticky enough for slickrock.
Bottom line for me: they look like they would be better off road than they really are. Free doesn't always mean it's a good deal.

goodyear tires

These are good tires. They actually have almost an identical tread as the dick cepek off roaders. I wheel in Pa and have good luck with them.
