those are the bias ply military tires and are 36" tall. They suck. Terrible pattern to them is instantly obvious they will and do pack up in mud. Better off with the 37" radial tires they used, they still pack but not half as bad, the ones they use right now are 37" BFG baja's and are a much softer pattern and look to be a great tire by the pattern, but since they have only been using them for a couple of years are not as easily available yet.

which ones?

the bias, old radial, or new baja radial?

Old style radial. Great deal. Hmmm...

I couldn't find the JFP tires on their site anymore, I wonder if they stopped selling them?

Be careful ordering from Trailworthy. I ordered a set of five recentered 8-bolts with the jfp tires last summer and still don't have a good set of five.

Out of the original five, one was worn way down on the edges and one had a lot of sidewall bulges and wouldn't balance. Also, one of the outer rings was bent like it was tightened wrong. After multiple emails, phone calls, messages to everyone I could find on pirate and here I finally got two replacement tires a few months later. They said the ring would still work but it won't hold air on that tire.

The two replacement tires had paint all over them, tread and sidewalls, and one has a major flatspot. I can't get anyone at TWF to respond to an email or call me back. They are very nice when you talk to them but can't seem to send a good set of tires and are very hard to contact.

i saw these same tires on *bay a while back and had about the same prices IIRC.... I don't remember if it was TWF or not... might be worth a look... If i remember when i get home from work i will look and post a link...

sipe them or groove them up and I bet they work a lot better, even though hard is hard.
I agree, my Swampers are grooved and they hook up a lot better than the factory tread, I think it would be a similar case with these tires. Breaking up the big tread blocks would allow the tire to flex a lot more.

reckon they are the old style, they look cooler anyway lol

twf only has old radials

Weird, never had an issue with them no has anyone else I know. 1 person was shipped wheels without his inserts he ordered but they were sent out the next day and he had em 2 days later.

The bias not only suck due to hardness but also design. You would have to 100% change the tread pattern to get them to work worth a crap.

Not worth the effort, start with a better tire such as the radials.

I would disagree with this statement, bias ply do suck on the highway but I have found them to perform very well off road, the sidewalls in particular are much more robust than radials. On the Swampers at least breaking the tread blocks up let them flex very well on technical trails.

Other than the cost and poor highway performance I'd probably buy another set of swampers.

I finally got trailworthy on the phone, they are shipping out another tire to replace the bad replacement.
They are very nice and very willing to try and do what it takes to make things right but are so shorthanded that it can be very hard to get in touch with them.

He also said to call instead of emailing.

Anybody using these Radials? If so, which direction do you run them? I run a fleet of H1's for off road tours and use the heck out of these. (about 25 per year) I also run them on my FJ55 with center pattern tipped forwards. (see mid. pic.) But have not really noticed a traction difference either direction unless aired down. When aired down, and the center pattern is tipped aft, it seems to allow the outer pattern to make better contact. Which is nice on stone but tough on sand. Anyone else tried these both ways? If so:

- What surfaces offer best traction in either direction? (sand, bedrock, slickrock, gravel, etc.)
- What kind of tread life do you see? (I get 2 seasons, maybe 5000 miles, all off-road at max H1 capacity, Center pattern tipped forwards)
- Any intolerable vibrations with mixed directions on same vehicle? ( The H1's do not mind much, but none are balanced anyway so they all shake a little...)

I once used the old bias ply 36"'s and they just did not hook up on much of any surface unless grooved. Then they just wore out quickly. IMO the radials offer better wear life and traction for about the same investment. All the military tires I am discussing here are surplus 90 - 95% tread life on purchase.

Also.... IMHO... Swampers are what I run on my FJ40. Nothing hooks up better when properly heated with the right foot.:hillbilly:

Thanks for your input!!!

My .02. I spent a lot of time in HUMV's in the mountains on my deployments. We had a lot of flats with the Wranglers that came on the the trucks (not exactly sure with model). We had a flat every couple of days. We got ahold of some super swampers and I never saw on of those go flat. The issue was rubbing sharp rocks on the sidewall. The goodyears just couldn't take it, while the Super Swampers could.

Stopping to change tires can get dangerous, so we got more super swampers.

I am not talking about swampers. I am talking about the 36" military bias ply tires that this thread was initially about. There is nothing good about the military bias ply tires other than they are cheap but people should be paying you to take them due to the massive suck they bring.

My 40" boggers are bias, and I am planning on moving up to 42" bias ply pitbull rokers, or the 43" TSL SX bias.
