Glovebox won't open. Help.... (1 Viewer)

To start off, I sure feel silly asking this question. 95 FJ, as the title states, the dang glovebox won't open. We have no memory of ever locking it and the two keys that we have won't insert all the way into the lock, which makes me believe our memories are correct. I unscrewed the two screws that hold the door on at the bottom, hoping that it would take care of the situation, but no such luck. Any suggestions? Can anyone check theirs and tell me if the slot is vertical when locked? Ours is currently horizontal. Thanks in advance.

On my 97 the slot is unlocked and vertical.

I don't believe the key is supposed to go all the way in.

Combine the two post above and you have it. Half insertion and turn to vertical.

Well the key goes in about 3/4 (probably the same depth that you consider 1/2). And it's horizontal. Well s***....super confused now. None of us remember locking it and the keys I have won't unlock it. The third key is with my daughter right now and she left about 30 seconds before I made the original post. Will check her key when she gets home tomorrow.

Wiggle the key around a bit. The glovebox lock isn't exactly a precision part, and your key is likely worn while that lock isn't. Try pulling it out just a bit, or inserting it more firmly. Maybe some 'dry' lubricant (something recommended for locks, not oil or WD40).

Yeah, we have a little bottle of lock specific WD40. Not the normal blue bottle. Need to find where I put it. Thanks guys, hopefully I figure it out soon, gotta admit I feel pretty dumb on this one...

Found the lock lube. No luck. Will try tomorrow with daughter's key

Daughter came home and her key unlocked it. She said she "might" have locked it when she took it out and parked at the end of a trail recently. Hmmmm...... Well, lesson learned. She apparently has the master key and we are using valet keys. Lesson learned in an embarrassing way. Rather than delete this thread to hide my dumbness, I will leave it in case someone else finds themselves in the same situation some day.

Recently picked up an 80 and the key wouldn't work anywhere but the ignition. New key made at the dealer for $30 and all good now.
