Getting Ready to Durabak My Entire 80

My 80 is getting ready to go from heavily oxidized white paint to Avocado Green . Entire rig will be coated.

I have 3 gallons of UV textured for the entire project and will be rolling it on, I've read the threads and will be doing all the necessary prep work. I have two main questions/concerns:

1) How do the edges at the doors and hood turn out just coating the outside? Should I open the doors and go all the way to the inside trim? This is keeping in mind the project is about a permanent fix for heavily oxidized paint and offroad protection, not looking perfect close up, but I want it to look great from 20 feet and pretty good close up.

2) How do I deal with gasket trim around the sunroof and windshield, etc. Just tape it off and Durabak up to the trim leaving the paint under the gasket?

Anything else I should be concerned about for a whole rig project? I am planning to take a couple of days off at the end of next week so I have a clear two days for the project without interruption.

One option - I havent seen the trim if it is metal then i guess just tape it off but if it is rubber then you could get some small rope and shove it under the gasket all the way around which in turn will lift it up a little allowing you to get tape under and over the trim and some durabak under the rubber giving you a really nice finish......?

As for the doors and such normally there is a metal fold over lip about a 1/2" or so behind the edge and you could tape it off there????

Just my 2 cents only worth about 1/2 a cent though

Trim is rubber that is a good idea on the small rope to lift it up

I may do inside the doors to the weather strip and leave the rest alone, that will give a nice finish.

Glad to help hope all goes well! I have used durabak and wish i would have had a little more than a gallon to do the underside of the tub..... You do have 3 though that should be fine. I know you will want to put it on in a couple coats because if you only do one you will ummm.... see through it is the best way to describe. I sprayed though not rolled

Planning to do 3 coats to ensure total coverage, so a gallon a coat should be enough (I hope )

HMM... I/you would sure think so but ?? I need to shut up because i sprayed mine and may have lost a bit across the entire shop!! I have no idea how far a roller can make it. But for the most part i controlled well and.... Never mind if three gallons wont do a great job then what the hell will?? Three coats is a great idea in my mind and don't do like me!! My advice would be expect your first coat to look like CRAP!! It is OK move on and cover the entire vehicle and then the second coat will look better and then the third will look great!! Even though i planned for two coats it is so easy and tempting to make the first coat look good and before you know it you are running out with 1/4 vehicle to go!!!!

I'm jealous! I think it'll turn out great. I'm thinking 3 gallons might not be enough, but I hope you prove me wrong because I'm doing this soon.

A gallon is supposed to fully cover 60 sq. ft. to finished product, so I have 180 sq. ft. worth by that measure. Agree it will be close, I'll know after the first coat as I'll probably do the roof last. If one gallon doesn't make it, then the roof will get gallon #4

I think 3 gallons would be adequate. I did Herculiner over the wheels (removed flares), 1/3 the way up all the doors/rockers, and the front clip after removing the grille and lamps. That took 1/2 gallon for 3x coats.

When you apply the first coat, it does look like CRAP, as 4x4 Station Wagon says. But continue with 1x thin coat, allowing to dry to the touch before applying #2 and then #3 coats. It is thin and spotty, you'll be tempted to put it on thick--but don't.

Inside the doors, I painted the jambs with rattle-can flat black. That way I didn't have to Herculine inside the doors. My concern was to avoid an uneven surface for the weather strip. Speaking of, be cautious with the door weather strip, I accidentally "glued" one shut (about 4" worth) when applying the liner on the exterior.

Good idea on the rattle can inside, that will keep things simple.

I'll post pics of the process and results, first time I've done this so it will be interesting, but I think prep will be key and from there it's just patience

I'd think twice about rolling Durabak. My experience with it is that the roller tends to stand up all of the texture pieces making it sharp to the touch, like 50 grit sand paper. A cheap undercoating gun and some disposable containers puts it on alot smoother. It might work well to put on a rolled scratch coat, wait 20 minutes then spray the top coat.

It took me 1/2 gallon to do the tub on my 40. Good luck.

I dont know how thick you are coating it, but It took me 7gallons to do the inside of my old K-5 Blazer, and it has even chipped off. I had it sand blasted and then hit with some 50Grit and rolled the liner on. The texture is softer than I thought it would be, but will still scrape if you slide across it. It also made my mom hi, so be careful.

I wasnt going to say it but since someone else did i agree! I tried to roll it and but others have done it successfully and it looks great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guns to shoot it on are only like 25.00 but maybe that is why it took me a gallon to do under my tub?????? If i rolled it maybe less?????
