the decision was made when i heard that the River Shiver was on this year. This is the ONLY TLCA event hosted in Canada. I was trail boss for a number of years when this idea came about. I do believe it was Peter Straub (Behemoth) that dreamed it up and made it happen with the help of the local Calgary Land Cruiser club.
Mitch has been working with me for a year now and i felt it would be a nice "thank you" to give him a chance to attend a large Cruiser get together and to experience winter wheeling in Alberta.
The troopie build ground to a halt while an important decision was being made about the body work and where it was going to be performed.
Mitch says "hey, lets stick that turbo on your ragtop"

and

so the story starts.

this is a mapped T3/T4 hybred on a custom adapter between the existing manifold and the base. I have used a number of these now and the results definately put a smile on my face.

here is the reason for the turbo, the muffler was shot. the rest of the system was solid still.
i have had the turbo sitting under the shelf since i bought the truck a few years back waiting for a reason to install it. i didn't really have a need since the truck performs quite well off road. On road i never had a need for the turbo with a 80 k/h speed limit and no real hills to attack. the engine turned the 36" tractor tires with no issue.
so why do it?

because i can? because i need an exhaust system anyway?

in with the truck and off with the old exhaust

while Mitch was removing the old system i was assembling the turbo to the manifold and the senders for the gauges ...

over the years i lost the waste gate support as well as the oil return line feed
so
i had to make them up ... :meh:

remove rear battery
remove oil filter
relocate the wiring out of your way
remove oil sender unit ...

install oil feed assembly with factory sender on the bottom ...
install turbo to cross over pipe
install crankcase ventilation pipe to turbo feed hose
spider 033.webp

spider 035.webp

finish the airbox to turbo feed hoses
make up the SS exhaust piping to send off to get welded
finish wiring up the gauges senders

but at the same time
change out rear t/case seal that was leaking
change out worn U/joint
cut the panels to replace the front doors, rear doors, side panels, cut for 6X9 speakers in the rear and 5" in the front doors, run wires to the back, check all fluids, install new winch selenoids and controller :hhmm:

and today i got the call that the decision has been made so tomorrow morning we finish up the ragtop to get ready for shipping and then back on the troopie... :bounce:

one of the issues with having a removable top is the damage to the cardboard panels in the sun and rain.
for a couple years now i have leaned towards replacing them with alloy panels but never got around to it.
so
since the truck was in the shop i needed to get on it.

off with the old.
i also didn't like the lack of leg room in the rear so the side mount seats from my hard top 70 were going in. these will modified today with a fold down leg support.
i also wanted nice deep sound so a water resistant foam was used to create a "box"

installing the speakers into the front panels.
hole saw and then prep with tap and install spacer and speaker.

i do not have time right now to send the panels off to get PC black but come summer i will...

the SS exhaust was done today so it was installed.
tucked up nice and high
but
i might have to rework the rear section but not till after RS ...

the ice radials will be installed in Calgary when i get out there.
today the final touches should be done then we can get the truck on the road for a test run.

so it is a winter storm here today so no test run was possible
instead we modified the rear seats for the flip out leg ...

first, remove the legs
next drill all 55 spot welds holding the sheet metal on
then cut the support in half and add extension
weld the support to the bottom and test for vertical
spider 063.webp
spider 064.webp
spider 066.webp

weld the sheet metal back on once the legs are welded securely
slap some paint on till spring when everything get powder coated
