Gday, about to buy a 1971 fj45 with a 3 speed gear box and id be looking to swap it for a 4 speed gearbox. Would the bolts be in the same place for both gearboxes or would it be a bit more complicated? Cheers

Being in Australia I would buy a H41 with a split transfer with a hand brake. Could probably locate the driveshafts too. That is the combo I have for my 65 FJ45. Same bellhousing will work for four speeds from 73 on. It would also work with the H55F five which is common in Australia. Might even look going that route instead of a four speed. One thing to keep in mind is the three speed belling is where the rear motor mounts are. Four speed bellhousings were the same until 8/80. After that rear motor mount was a crossmember under the transmission. Probably good with the bellhousing mount with a four speed. Five speed would want to use a crossmember under the transmission.

What part of Australia, it's a big country?

Can I ask the benefit of going with the split transfer rather than the one piece ? are they less noisy ? Stronger ?

Split cases are stronger, and have the option of 4:1 low range gears (last I heard at least). They are also somewhat quieter.

This is what I’ve read about them… never owned one though.

The “3-speed” 3 finger clutch can be used with 4-speed transmissions… mine came that way in ‘74. They are heavier and help with lower speed wheeling. They’d probably work with a five speed also.

The frame crossmember behind the transfer-case may be close th the back of the transfer case and some have cut and turned it. Others have cut through it on both sides and added flanges to make it removable.

If the 71 FJ45 is like my 65FJ45 the frame member in not an issue. It further back than the FJ40 it also arched to clear the driveshaft. FJ40 did that after 9/72. 1/79 Toyota standardized frame and crossmember. 45/47 are same as all other 40 series.
