Hi everyone, been away for a while but now I'm back in the safari Lodge working away.Anyway our HZJ-75 station wagon has developed a nasty noise at idle. It sounds a LOT like a layshaft bearing but it only changes pitch VERY slightly when the clutch is depressed. I dropped the gearbox today, the clutch plates seem fine, almost new in fact. The release bearing is ok too, doesn't have any roughness or tight spots. The bolts for the flywheel are all tight and there's no tightness or play in the crankshaft. The only thing I can find is that the gearbox input shaft has a bit of play, about, or less than, 1mm; I can only just see it but it's easy to feel if I grip the shaft and move it laterally.Anyone got any other ideas as to what could cause the noise?Like I said:it only happens at idle and stationary although any gear can be selectedit sounds a lot like a knackered bearing in the gearbox somewhere (like a hollow rattling sound)it doesn't go away when the clutch is depressed only changes pitch very slightlyI've run the engine with all the ancilliary belts removed and the noise is still there. All oil levels are good and the engine and gearbox oil have been changed. No traces of metal or dead bearing were present in the old oil. Thanks everyoneJoe

Its probably the clutch throw out bearing - the big round one that attaches to the fork - change it, the pilot bearing in the fly wheel and the crank seal while you have it out. That play in the input shaft is fine.

Input shaft play is normal, it really needs the pilot bearing for support. Really avoid using cheap bearings in that application.

I'd go for a release bearing from what you're saying. With the clutch in, and the tranny in gear, does it make that noise?

Thanks GuysJohn, yeah it still makes the noise with the clutch in and gearbox in gear.I'll try get a new release bearing, pilot bearing and rear crank seal. Like Louis says it makes sense to do them while the lot is out. Thanks againJoe
