Hi!

I need some help from some-one who knows gearboxes.

The issue is that besides the HJ45 and the BJ42 we have a Volvo TGB1314 6X6 that I have converted to diesel using the engine and gearbox from a KZJ70 from 1994.

I know it's not a 70-series, but if you stretch the truth a bit, it's like putting Volvo axles on a 70, and a few more parts... So I hope it's ok to ask in ths forum!

As the volvo is F/C I had to make up a new gear shift system, but although it works, it has some draw-backs, 1: the longevity, which I suspect might be short... 2: the height, it will be a problem when fitting a floor.

You can see the system here:

I found out that Marks Adapter of Australia sells a modified Toyota Dyna gearbox for the hi-Lux'es. The sell it as a stronger alternative to the R15X that's found in the pick-ups.

The Dyna R451/2 has shifter forks on the side which would be perfect for my F/C, so I contacted Marks, but unfortunately their kit does not accomodate the split case I have, which I need for the off-set axles on the volvo (similar off-set to a Toyota...)

So back to square one...

but a solution might be a hybrid R45X/R15X box, with the rear part being R15X and front being R45X.

I have a few pics that illustrates what I think might be possible:

The R151f with the cruiser splitcase transfer:

R151 taken apart at the middle:

As far as I can see it should be possible to take the front housing from the R452 Dyna housing - with the shifter mechanism - and attach that to one side of the middle plate, and use the R151f on the other side, but before I spend close to between $500 and 1,000 I would like some second opinion, perhaps even from some-one who has actual experience in gearboxes, unlike myself! :)

my gut feeling is you could make it work with a bit of tweaking ...
but
never invest money you can not afford to lose

i would contact the company and ask the same questions.

cool truck!!

Thanks Crusher!

You are absolutely right about not investing more than you can afford to loose.

I too think it may be doable, but not having rebuild a gearbox yet, it is good to get some info from those who have.

Bump for more input please!

Well first off I know nothing about volvos. In fact, I've only seen volvo cars in person. On top of that I've never even seen a KZJ engine before either nor have I rebuilt a gearbox before so my opinions are uterly worthless to you.

So, instead of opinions I will substitute it with questions and even a proposition. Question I have is why did you choose the K series diesel in the first place? They are not known for being one of toyota's better engines nor are they fitted into a heavy duty application (prados etc.). A 6x6 volvo seems more than just heavy duty, it sounds industrial to me. Who knows maybe it could be perfect but that was just my impression.

The other question is why a toyota diesel instead of a volvo diesel? (unless you cannot get them or they are huge dollars then I understand)

Really I am just trying to understand further about your situation to further my own understanding without helping you much (sorta selfish I guess when its put out like that). So I will do this for you: post your progress, maybe add a couple pictures of your bada$$ Volvo with a toyota engine in it and I'll try and keep your thread alive so it is not forgotten.

Lastly I do have an opinion: I think it should work but like Crushers said maybe with some tweaking. All comes down to how much you can afford to throw at this project.

Hi 77cruiser77

To answer your questions, the Volvo 6X6 is not that big, it weighs 4.200 pounds GVW without bed. The original engine is a straight 6 B30, 3 litres and 105hp.

And the 1KZ engine is not that bad, actually I find it rather good!

Toyota have used it in their Dyna series trucks, which (as far as I remember) goes up to a GVW of 5 metric ton.

I know that some have had issues with the head, but which Toyota diesel haven't? Those who have had issues, have changed heads, and have had no further issues after that.

Furthermore I have installed gearbox and engine, so the only custom parts are the drive shafts.

Another reason is that because of vehicle egistration rules here in Denmark I want a GVW of max 3.5 metric tons, which a light engine helps me keep.

Volvo does not have a diesel in the right size... Nor a gearbox that would fit.

In Europe we have a totally different view on engine size, virtually no-one would put a V8 in cruiser here. Gas prices are way too high. I think the most commen engine size here is a 1.6 litre engine!

R452 - 151 hybrid

Hey hey Christian.

I have an R452 complete and I have a 151 from a 100 series.

Would you like me to attempt a dummy up?

Tried some old 33's under the RU12 yesterday...now I'm thinking expedition truck.

FYI for comparing parts have you seen the website toyodiy? You can use year model to navigate.

All toyota parts back to 1975, no b.s.

Good luck, you had better be coming to Australia in your post apocalyptic artform!
