i have an fj40 with a 307 chev v8. soon im going to pull the engine out and get some more power out of it while rebuilding it but my problem is that i want 260hp and i dont think the gear box can handle it. what are the common conversions i want a manual and for it 2 be stronger than the original 4 speed. anyone have any idea? thanks

I ran a stock 4 speed behind a 300+hp 383 stroker for almost 3 years w/ no problems at all. The only reason I installed a nasty, hard to shift, heavy as hell, love it to death sm420 is for the low 7.05:1 first gear. That Toyota tranny is way stout and you should not have any issues.

I have a 300hp 350, and broke 2 gear in the Toyota 3 speed...

Cruiser 3 speed is weak. Cruiser 4 speed is not. 260HP is a pretty conservative build. The H42, H41 and H55F will all handle this level with no problems.

My dad had a 400hp 350 in his cruiser with a soa lift and 35's. We would do burnouts and race it around all day. It had a stock 4 speed and never had any problems with it thats why im putting one in my cruiser.

I have a SM 465 mated to a NP 205 that I'm sell for $400. It has the bell housing on it.

The cruiser 4speed should be stout enough. When I swapped in a sm465 my 4spd and clutch were worn out and making noises and occasionally popping out of gear. almost 20 years old with lots of abuse.
The LOW 1st gear of sm420 or 465 definitely make them worth the effort and money to put in your rig. After you swap in a HD tranny then your next weak link is the t-case, rear pinion, front birfs....:whoops:

Like all have said ... the 3 speed is not too impressive. A stock 4 speed is much stronger. I don't run one now but have before with 400+ HP.
