Gear reduction starter wiring

I read the faq section about wiring a relay in when changing to a gear reduction starter and tried that yesterday.

When the truck started the engine would no longer turn off. I could even remove the key and it stayed on.

I thought I wired it exactly like the FAQ suggested, but obviously failed. I think I don't understand what goes where.

Does anyone have a rough sketch of what wire goes where?
 
i re-read the FAQ on the GR starter. he must have an early cruiser and is trying to reintegrate the old 3rd wire from starter to coil to send a full 12V+ to the coil for startup. can you get the truck to start without all the relay nonsense? you just need the big positive wire to the battery, 12 gauge black w/ white to the spade contact on the starter and big fat ground from starter to frame
 
I saw there were two ways to wire it, one was just to leave that last wire unterminated and the other was to add the relay to allow for a full 12v to the starter when the key is turned. That was in the FAQ section and it had a write up but for some reason my wires must be different. The little wire with out the spade was the one the I wanted to keep using.

Yes the truck starts without the relay connected and the little wire unterminated. It just seems like a good idea to get a full 12v to the gear reduction starter.

It's a stock engine.

you are always getting a full 12V to the starter because that fatter of the 2 wires comes straight from the key and that is the one that attaches to the solenoid contact. the relay is to send that 12V back up to the coil ONLY while the key is in the START position, aka while you are cranking.
 
Excellent. That way is super simple. I made it too complicated. Time to remove some wires in the 40 (that I installed yesterday)........
