gear oil (color)

ok heres da thing.

just swapped out my gear oil in my truck maybe a week ago. ended up going thru some deep water agian (video soon). but i checked my diffs last nite, and both looked kinda neon green. like snot or somthing, I guess that it would mean that i got water in them???? but i have breathers all the way up to my engine bay with filters on them. i mean they dont look too bad. but i was thinkin maybe they turned that color from the old stuff that dint all drain out?

does any know to how to figure out whats going on by the color of the diff fluid?
because if this mean i got water in, ill be back out under my truck agian tonight.


oh this is for my 60's buds, their t-case fluids alwasy turn jet black but mine doesnt. anyone got any ideas on that?

Hey Lowtide-is your cap shift button broken?

Here's my take on your gear oil. It has water in it. Extended breathers or not, some water still seeps in and contaminates the oil. If I were you, I would buy cheap gear oil in the 5 gallon bucket. If they have an Autozone near you the Coastal Gear Oil 80w-90 works fine and costs about $1 per quart when bought in bulk. Just change out your fluids after you are in water that deep, everytime. That will keep everything happy. I liked your pics by the way, and there is something about door deep water that is fun! Just up your maintence schedule to compensate. You might want to pull your knuckle plug and stick in a popsicle stick and sample that grease. It can get contaminated by water too.

There was an article in Toyota Trails a year ago or so, where a guy in Africa talked about maintaining their FJ40's during the flood season. There were times they changed their diff oil DAILY due to the water contamination.

Oil that gets blue or black usually means heat, as in too much.
