Ok so Ive had this 1-2 inch gash located on the stock muffler since I purchased the truck with 40k miles. The truck was in excellent condition and appeared in like new condition. The only issue I saw when I looked over the truck was this gash.

What would have logically caused this. The only thing I can think of is hitting an object on the road and it piercing the muffler.

Does this have any detrimental effect on the engine. It doesn't appear to have a leak due to no build up around the opening and I have never noticed an exhaust leak.

Any opinions?

That's what I figured, It seems strange there is not an exhaust leak from that hole. Oh well. Thanks

I have several gashes and a few fist size dents on mine and no leaks. Just everything else on the exhaust system is leaking  . I am amazed at how thick the stock muffler is.

There's plenty of baffling in there that's probably got it sealed. If it's worrying you just take it to a muffler shop, they'll run a quick bead on it, probably cost you a 12 pack.

Yea after looking at it, it didn't seem like it would take much to seal it. But lm not to concerned about it since it doesn't make an annoying sound and it's not leaking

I have at least a fist sized hole in that location... engine runs great!

That muffler has a cover over it as well (well, your's does mine fell off in heavy wind in west TX.) so that may be why no exhaust leak. I bet the gash is in the cover only and the muffler it's self is just dented.
