My fuel filter keeps getting clogged with rust. I have put less than 1000 miles, since an engine swap, and have already changed out 4-5 clogged fuel filters. THe tank has been cleaned out 2X. So I already wasted $200+ on the cleans. I did check on the recall (via email) with toyota about 4 years ago and they told me that it had been done.

Any sources where I can get a CHEAP new tank?

Thanks in advance,
Meatloaf

I have one (was new 2 or 3 years ago) from my FJ 60 that I replaced with a Long Range tank from Man-A-Fre, but I don't think I can ship it to you, as it has a little gas in it. It was replaced under the recall about 2 or 3 years ago, and within a couple of months of that, I installed the over-sized tank. It might have rusted inside during it's time in the garage, I really don't know. I'm in Southern CA. You want to come by and haul it off, you can have it. Not trying to be a smart aleck: I would like to get rid of it.

How are the lines leading to the filter?

Not sure, but the filter is about two feet away from the gas tank, right before the fuel pump. Id figure that after these many filter changes, if there was anything in the lines, it would have cleaned out by now?

If I was 500 miles closer, I would certainly consider it. Thanks for the offer.

Regardless, it would not hurt to clear the lines before and after the filter w/ some shop air. Disconnect at each end, use the rubber-tipped blowgun attachment, and blast away. I'd wait until you get the tank retaining rust or not sorted out, of course.
Hope your new tank search turns up golden.

Edit: Adding this portion that didn't get into the original post:

Did a shop do the tank cleaning for ya? DIY kits are around $60 for up to a 25 gal tank, and contain phosphoric acid etching to remove the rust. Add a length of chain into the tank along with the acid, grab a buddy, and knock the snot outta the tank. Empty, and repeat if needed. Coat the tank with the epoxy product, and that should do it. I agree to check any in-tank filters, as that could be a missed source of rust in an otherwise clean tank.

What does the sock or screen on the bottom of the fuel pick-up in the tank look like?

It does not have one. The 60 has an electric pump on the frame to fuel the Vortec.

The first shop in Dallas supposedly did a "hot tank" or "hot dip" and the second shop here in Austin said they used some 'expensive' cleaner he ordered out of California. 2nd guy said he had pulled out a lot of rust...

Not a fuel pump, but some sort of pre-filter. Usually these are called a "sock." Can't recall ever seeing an OE pick-up that did not have something to filter out the big stuff. Most likely it should have one. Frequently when they are missing the exact sort of trouble that you're having is what happens. You can have the tank perfectly clean and free of rust, but what about the load of fuel that you got off the bottom of some station's tank? Any flakes from their tank can end up in yours.

I meant the pre-filter, it does not have one. Since I went with the Vortec, the electric pump is ~2 feet from the tank with the filter in-between the pump and the tank. Pick up filter migth be a good thing to get on there...

Expensive, eh? Well, Phosphoric acid is about $15/gallon at Home Despot, and as I posted, the whole gas tank repair kit is $60. I'm not saying I know more than either of those pros, but then, rust from my tank isn't clogging up the filter, either! hehe

Being a business, even in Texas, they may not be able to use the chemicals that you can at home.

For instance, here in CA I can have several to many 55 gallon drums of race fuel in my garage and there isn't much that anyone can say about. (Weird for CA, huh?) But if my racing engine building friends have just one on their business premises it's a major permit/citation ordeal.

Had a look at my FSM and it looks like there is supposed to be something on the end of the fuel pick-up tube. The illustration is not very good, beyond saying there's something there I've no idea what it actually looks like.

According to toyodiy.com it is p/n: 77023‑22040
Illustration shown there is the same as in my FSM.

Thanks ntsqd, I will order the "sock"... I will probably also order the epoxy coating for the tank. Maybe this will fix it now for good.

Im thinking most of us that got the tank recall dont have that "sock".
When the tank was pulled and checked the lines for blockage I did not see any "sock".

Im sure it was there at one point or another but perhaps was never put back during the tank recall ??

Interesting...
