I see a diesel as being quite feasible . Probably a 1kz te as fitted to hilux and prado.
The FJ shares a similar floorpan to the other 2 so why not?

I'd say the poll numbers speak pretty loudly.

I think this poll speaks loud too.
I am sure someone from Toyota is reading this.
Maybe they will take note.

I should also: a Turbo is a must.
If Toyota does not put it on, we sure will. :)
But I doubt Toyota would sell a new truck without a turbo. Especially the FJC.

The magazines would rip them apart if they did.
However the mags would also praise a Turbo deisel.

Cheers,
Nick

i'd take diesel over gas considering the technological advances that have been made recently in diesel.

Gas. I will consider diesel if the new Tundra will come out with crewcab dually.

Fortunately for you, current EPA regs require turbocharging on diesel engines. :bounce:

Unfortunately, the turbo is being used as a emissions reduction device, and not as a efficiency improver.:crybaby:

Hmm...Is that how they are doing EGR? Regardless Mercedes OM642 DE 30 LA sure gets a boost (221/369) - and is awful clean. But Mercedes is bettiing on SCR (with SCR and ADblue its supposedly 50 state - just cant meet 150k FUL) and so far EPA aint biting. Then again nobody is any closer.

Read in the WSJ that EPA had relented (again?) on 150k/10yr FUL - heard anything on that?

I remember reading this article that Toyota will not be producing any more cars Forced Induced from factory(supra was the last one) atleast to the US. It's because some of the weird organizations they're in. Captain Planet kinda thing

edit: so there goes your diesel engine option.

Sort of. EGR is to reduce cylinder pressure and therefore combustion temp. A similar effect is achieved by stretching cam timing and using an undersize turbocharger. The turbo will blow a lot of air through the engine, which reduces the percentage of trash in the exhaust gas, and lowers combustion temp. Lowering the CR is also a new emissions requirement.

But it all reduces combustion (fuel) efficiency compared to the optimum cam & turbo combination. What we are seeing is spark engines w/ increased compression & direct injection, and compression engines w/ reduced compression. The fuel efficiency of diesels is going downhill, and spark efficiency is increasing. My (sad) prediction is that there will soon be no reason to buy a diesel in the US market, because the fuel economy will be almost the same as gas engines w/ similar performance.

Just that.

Waste vegetable oil...free is better than any MPG on gasoline.

Jim:

OK I follow, but can you clarify

I can see loss with EGR systems - but SCR, least Mercedes claims
with Bluetec, is more efficient. I realize there is some marketing
fluff here, but real world the newest Daimler engines are showing
pretty decent efficiency cycles. The one big advantage - SCR is
post combustion - but requires servicing well before FUL.

So your comments are applying to EGR (the most likely EPA
approved) but not necessarily all new diesel technologies?
Or are they making these compromises with SCR systems?
From what Ive seen with SCR, doesnt seem inefficiencies
are visible. But unless they increase the service intervals
Im not sure how EPA will recieve it.

Almost tech
