Gas Mileage Question

The less MPG on the MT6 is not due to gearing but due to the fact that is Full Time 4wd. Need more power to move 4 wheels instead of just 2. Or that's what I've told.

Actually it is both. The diffs are lower in the MT as well as running through the TC all the time.

Agreed.

Just a thought - If the set up is similar to my 94 4runner, with the p/t 4wd, your hubs are still permenantly engaged, 4wd disconnect was at the diff, so you still are turning those front axles full time. Which begs the question, in an auto would manual hubs increase mileage?

mpg

stock auto 20mpg if i drive. 24 mpg if my learning to drive son is behind the wheel. 28000 miles on the truck

Have put only 20 tankfulls thru my 5AT but have averaged 22.875 over that time. Worst tank was the first (dealer's 85 octane) at 20.055 mpg and my best was 25.870 (and twice over 24 mpg).

I run 91 octane, live at high altitude, drive mostly rural and highway (+/- 5 mph of speed limit) and drive conservatively.

Disclaimer : Your mileage will vary.

When I first got mine I was getting 21 on the highway. Now, 16,000 miles in I'm getting 23 mpg.....I run cruise at 67 and always take it easy when taking off.....Running Citgo 93 octane...

My mileage sucks. I got better in my 60!
Even with my FJC all tarted up, my 62s gas mileage doesn't even come close to the FJC. Even get better than my wife's 100.

Mine too but at least the FJ can merge on the freeway at a reasonable speed.

In my 60 I just got used to people glaring and flashing their lights at me for going too slow.

On my way to the Ouray, FJ Summit I passed 7000 miles. My normal 20 to 21 jumped to 23 mpg. I drive around 68 mph on trips. In town I'm averaging 19.5 to 20 mpg. Off road... 12 mpg...

happy trails

SAD...

Truly sad that I get virually the same mileage from a 1980 Cruiser that you guys get with your 2007 fjs. What is the world coming to?

Getting better some might say. Your 1980 cruiser doesn't have 239hp and 278ft-lbs, optional full time 4wd, 4 wheel disc brakes with anti lock, stock rear locking differential, etc... I am really surprised it gets the same gas mileage (18-20mpg per this thread), as that doesn't seem to be the case at all, when reading threads about older cruisers.

20 MPG from a 1980??!?!??!
S**t! How'd you do that? At the very best, I get 13 from my 1988, and I'm happy to get that!!

hmmm 20 mpg

I've waited until the fuel light goes on to fill up the last couple times, and have usually covered about 300 miles and take about 15 gallons (thus the 20 mpg thing). But, since the vehicle has a 19 gallon tank, do I have 4 in reserve or do I need to "top her off'" as one poster described?

I've had the same experience. Except my first tankful from the dealer was 85 octane regular and it covered 265 miles - don't know the significance of that except to guess it burns more efficiently with the 91 octane. I have no idea how 'topped off' that tank was but since then I've been typically squeezing in another 2 gallons-ish after the pump initially stops. Also, I added mud tires (265/70/17) and still seem to get 19 - 20 mpg (5AT). However, almost all of these have been highway miles thus far.

I'm also getting around 14mpg with the manual and a K&N air filter, it has 7000 miles on it and I can only blame it on my driving habits. Yes its normal.
