Ok, I took possession of the FJ in July. Since then I have been keeping track of the gas milage. I have gotten an average of 14 miles to the gallon. What the heck? Do you guys think something is wrong?:crybaby:

I have a manual and I also use the FJ to drive to work in traffic everyday.

How bad is the traffic? Stock, with auto, I was getting 18-20. Lifted with 34's, 15-16. If you are spending large amounts of time stuck in traffic it will have a huge negative impact on the mileage.

MT 6 still running stock tire 17.5, best hwy. 20 mpg.

There have been some other threads on this - or at least the attached one, but the manual transmission, in general, is showing lower fuel mileage due to gearing. I was suprised to be getting slightly over 15 when I first got my FJ and put on 285/70/17 BFG AT's. Then I lifted it w/ Old Man Emu and now am seeing low 14's to high 13's around town. So, FJMouse, entirely possible, but in full stock trim it should do better. It certainly is not meeting Toyota's epa claim so, if you are in stock trim, take to the dealer with your concern and ask them to check that puppy out.

I drove my wife's FJ through DC traffic for a month and averaged 20+ MPG with an auti tranny.

An important issue to remember with FJ mileage is that the tank is a pain to "fill" at a consistent level. The feed neck/tube is narrow and for many the pumps can shut off well before the tank is full. I can typically "sqeeze" in another 1-2 gal after the pump clicks off. Remember that you have a 19gal tank, mine typically clicks off at about 15-16 gal then I top it off (not literally) to 16-17 gals once I see gas in the neck of the filler tube.

My average in mixed driving is 18+, best 21 on a long steady trip, worst in first few tanks.

Here is a spread sheet a member on my forum made for me.
You can see how my mileage has dropped off from almost 21 MPG combined city/freeway, down to much lower after more mods are added :D
Mine is the 5 speed auto.

Feel free to snag the file and use it with new entries.
There is a drop down list for the 3 grades of gas too.

FJMouse- How are you calculating your MPGs?

I made a 500 mile trip over the weekend with 3 friends [including me about 650 pounds] in my 4x4, auto and averaged 17.6 mpg. I think , with a lighter right foot, I could get maybe 19 mpg.

with my auto, I get aroung 17-18 city or highway. I stopped calculating after the first few fill ups, since it really doesnt matter, because my other driver is an 84 60, which gets 5-7 MPG on a good day.

You're very right about that. This afternoon I squeezed another 2.8 gallons into the tank after the pump clicked off.

Another mileage confuser is going with larger tires, but not recalibrating the speedometer accordingly. Since I went to 285/70R/17's, I'm not only showing about 2-3 mph less on my speedometer than I'm actually going (since the larger tire doesn't have to make as many revolutions to cover the same amount of geography). But, I'm also indicating a consistent 9/10ths of a mile between Interstate mile markers.

That means I'm actually getting 10% better gas mileage than my odometer is telling me when I calculate fuel economy. Not a real big deal, but it adds up.

Hi guys!

For a 285/70-R17 tire (up from stock 265/70-R17) you need to add 2.267 miles for every 65 miles you drive to your ODO reading.

If you have 260 miles on your ODO when you fill up, you actually have 9 miles more than you are seeing. (269 miles) The reason being is that the 285 tires has 616.599 revolutions per mile driven, whereas the 265 stock tire has 638.104 revolutions per mile.

So if you're getting between 260 and 280 out of a tank of gas, don't forget to add 9 to 10 miles to that mileage.

I added an OME lift with 285's and lost about 1.5 miles to the gallon. Countered that by adding a cold air induction kit. Did notice an increase in horsepower with the kit(Air Aid) so if you don't stomp on it you can still come close to the factory numbers. I'm averaging about 18.5(combo freeway/street), with the tank completely full.

FJMouse,

I get bad mileage too, have a stock 6 speed just like you do :D

I knew I wouldn't be getting this vehicle for the gas mileage, I bought it because I liked it and wanted it since it was a concept vehicle.

If people are upset about gasoline prices (I am), then we should march on Washington to demand gas prices be set to a reasonable level. $1.00 a gallon or cheaper for instance, and I'm not joking. The Arabs wouldn't have their oil to sell us right now if we hadn't kept Iraq from taking it back in Desert Storm/Shield in the early 90's.

I'm getting 19-20mpg using 91 octane. It goes down about 1mpg when I switch to mid grade. I think if I was going on a long highway trip the difference in octane would not matter that much and I'd switch to the 89 octane. The right foot does make a huge difference in mileage, but sometimes it is just too fun to "let 'er eat":D

The less MPG on the MT6 is not due to gearing but due to the fact that is Full Time 4wd. Need more power to move 4 wheels instead of just 2. Or that's what I've told.
