My gas gauge on my 82 fj40 always seems to read about a 1/4 tank higher than it really is. there is no pressure under the gas cap....what could it be. a bad gauge

Bad sending unit or bad ground on the unit. I doubt the bad ground. Pull the main wire off the unit and ground it. Gauge should go to full. OEM book has a resistance check on the sender to test it.
