I ordered a rebuild kit to do my turbo rebuild tonight. I have too much play in the turbine to feel comfortable driving to Moab like this. SO I rush ordered a kit from ADP in Vancouver.

Any one have links to a T3 do it your self page?

I found one for a volvo T3. Which should work. But if anyone has a good one bookmarked or finds one I be appreciated.

I want to start driving south tomorrow( with a fresh rebuild on a turbo)....... I'm a glutton for punishment.

I think there is a youtube vid out there too. It's pretty easy. I rebuilt my first one. Came apart easy went together easy. I would mark it so it goes back together as close to balanced as you can even though I think i read all the parts on those are individually balanced. Make sure that nut can't come loose. My first one was shot due to a couple of things like running it without oil and the bearing were shot, compressor and exhaust scraping the housing and the nut came loose  not really a good rebuild :( It did run like a bat out of hell while it lasted. I'd be hesitant so close to moab unless the fins are scraping the housing.

I got it apart. It was extremely hard to pull apart. The exhaust housing I had to heat with my little oxy propane torch. It just did not want to come off.

I meant to index the compressor wheel, but got distracted and it came off before I knew it. But I did read the balanced component thing too. SO I'm not really worried.

So I have the hot side and turbine wheel soaking in some brake clean for the night. To de coke it.

My wheels were in ok shape. The shaft had enough play that it just touched a little. I mean a little. So I was nervous to take it all the way to moab.

Well I will let you know how the rest goes tomorrow. I have to figure out how all the seals go...

Ok so I installed a kit only to find my bearing housing was also shot. SO I rushed ordered a bearing housing from ADP in Vancouver and finally got it together tonight. Bearing housing came in at 830pm at the airport. By 12 midnight I had it all re-installed in the truck. Tomorrow I will run it and see if I cry or smile.

I can say one thing, if you're going to DIY when you build a turbo kit for your engine....just buy a new turbo, The junkyard turbo's just are not worth the hassle. Maybe in a great big city where you can shop for used turbo's it is worth it... but not when the choice is limited.

After I got it all together I still have some fn movement. Marginal and maybe I am tilting it rather than trying to move it radially. But it has no in and out movement.

It's supposed to have some side to side play as that is where the oil cools an lubs the bearings. No in and out play is good. I have a spare if things go south in a hurry. Sounds like you'll be fine though.

I'm not sure I agree with the junk yard turbos. I have/had 3 good ones. I should have never rebuilt the first one. You have to find a good one though. I checked the shaft play and the miles on all the ones I pulled from the yard. The only bad one is the supra turbo I pulled. I had 3 people offer to buy it when i was pulling it. LOL

Here we don't have much options .. that it's a good reason to buy some cheap turbo from Turbonetics and DIY turbo kit ..

Wow, that was lucky to get a new housing in time.
Have you tested it yet?
