OK, so I just got a Garmin 76CSx and I am an illiterate IT guy.

Twi questions I would greatly appreciate help with:
1. How do I get the Topo maps to my handheld?

2. How do I get my notebook to display what is on my Garmin?

3. OK, 3 questions. The preloaded maps are VERY unimpressive detail. How do I get more details?

Thanks!
Cheers,

Eddie

There are a few you can download, google a little. Not all states are available, I was lucky to find ID out there as a freebie. Garmin uses a proprietary file type, keeps them in $$.

I've spent what feels like month's trying to find out how to use my laptop to show the screen display, no luck at this point. The usb cable with the gps will allow you to download maps via Garmin's Map Source software & charge the unit; if you can find out how to hook up a remote display I'd be grateful.:D:clap:

You can buy regional topo's (24,000:1) from Garmin for about $100 each, usually you can find them in dvd or micro-sd formats.

The first thing you need to install on your laptop is the Garmin software that allows you to properly communicate with the GPS unit. Download the current version of Mapsource form Garmin, or load it from the cd that came with the unit. The software enables you to transfer maps, waypoints, routes, etc to/from the unit.

Using Mapsource with the GPS unit hooked up to the laptop enables you to use the laptop screen to display GPS info.

Also visit the garmin site and download all the latest firmware and basemaps for the unit and your laptop.

As for topo maps, yes they cost $$. I have a full US set I bought years ago. There are some tricks and tips on the multitude of GPS websites out there. Do some searching.
